Admin edit: old thread is here http://www.superturbodiesel.com/std/show...hp?tid=235 beware some of the specs are incorrect

Ok, I decided to totally redo the turbo information thread, with a collaborative approach.

We're going to list actual turbos members have used, with the model and engine, short blurbs on the characteristics it had (when does it spool up, when does it choke, does it surge, etc), any adaptation notes (flanges, clocking, etc), what it originally came off of, compressor/turbine maps, etc.

So anyone who's got an unusual turbo, come make a post in this thread, and give a quick summary on what the deal is with it, and possibly a link to a more in-depth thread of yours.

I will compile a list of these turbos, with a list of the members who posted about each one underneath (linking to that particular post).

We also need stock turbo information too, basic info like "Here's a KKK" and "Here's a Garrett". Wastegate adjustment procedures would be nice too.

I think I'll start with the electronic GT2256V I attempted to cram onto my om617. Need to snap more pics of it.

Well not unusual but when my stock Garrett T3 45 trim self destructed, I opted to rebuild it with a 60trim compressor wheel.

Poor Little 45 trim looks like this @4500 rpm with 15lbs of boost:

New and improved 60 trim is much happier!

The old 45 trim just kinda screams but the 60 trim goes supersonic at speed. Sounds way cool. Not to mention the improved efficiency.
Boost comes in a tad earlier actually

45 trim comp wheel view:

60 Trim Wheel View, Obvious difference

For you So-Cal guys, I got all the work done @ Performance Techniques in San Berdoo. www.turbocharged.com Cost $400 for new cartridge, turbine wheel, Comp wheel, Comp housing machining, Balancing, Seals, and all

Will it be better to use a 60 trim even if the engine is fairly stock? Looking to have my turbo rebuilt soon.. my compressor wheel is beat to sh*t...

Look at the map. Better yet, it would be awesome if an OM617's rpm can be plotted across these maps, would make understanding them way easier.

The 60 trim optimizes for higher rpms. GSXR seemed think his 55 trim was a better balance, that's the stock 3.5L turbo.

Spooling is trickier. The maps don't really help with that. Probably gonna have to rely on actual experience. Anyways, I doubt another old wastegated turbo would be any better than the stock one. It's either going for smaller turbine housing (choking off higher rpm) or VNT.

You could map out rpm vs boost to come up with a line graph - turbo map... Would be a lot of work though and I would have to note where boost is at what rpm... at WOT?

I should have added the calculator link ... Here it is, just modify the rpm, boost; and altitude if needed....

http://www.not2fast.com/turbo/glossary/t...utyCycle=0
The only thing I am unsure on is CFM or flow out of the turbo. Wouldn't flow be much higher with a 60 trim vs. a 45 trim at the same boost?

I say the 60 trim is sweet and allows for higher boost if you decide to increase it. It worked awesome on my old 617 that was dying. I cant wait to throw it on the good current 617 i am driving now...

What exactly are these graphs showing might i ask? *not diesel tech trained* Tongue
So a 60 trim would work nicely with a stock OM617?

I'm running the .55 trim Garrett T-3 on my mildly-modded 603. It gives me plenty of boost by 2000rpm, wastegate is set at 18.5psi which it hits by 3500rpm, really nice low-end power from this setup. I'd imagine that you need some significant IP tuning to be able to use all of the air from the T-30 Garrett on a 617, 60-trim stock? Overkill.

It does have an annoying shreik from about 8psi-10psi, which happens to be where it runs at 75mph/3krpm, I need to find a way to quiet that down. Above that it crosses the 17khz audible threshold and I can't hear it anymore, probably pisses off nearby dogs though.

Here is some information on
Turbo: HE341VE
Motor: OM606
I have just changed my HE351VE to the smaller HE341VE. it spools faster and gives more boost at lover RPM.

Here are some numbers in high gear, meaning motor RPM rise slow. giving the turbo more time to build boost.

The engine feels fantastic pulling from 2500 - 5000 RPM Big Grin

Now width the HE341VE
0.5 bar at 2000 RPM (EGP 0,8)
1.0 bar at 2500 RPM (EGP 1,3)
1.5 bar at 2700 RPM (EGP 1,8)
1.8 bar at 3000 RPM (EGP 2,1)
holding 1.8 bar all the way to 5000 RPM (120,000 Turbo RPM)

Before width the HE351VE
0.5 bar at 2500 RPM (EGP 0,8)
1.0 bar at 3000 RPM (EGP 1,3)
1.5 bar at 3500 RPM (EGP 1,8)
1.8 bar at 3700 RPM (EGP 2,1)
1.8 bar at 5000 RPM (EGP 2,1) (95,000 Turbo RPM)

Hey cap? That first post answers my garret question.(Air research/garret T3) The sd's used the garret T3 and the 300d's used a kkk26.
Are parts interchangeable between the t3 and kkk? I was planning on going with captain's recipe. The 60 trim. I have a kkk26.

I was told that my stock '87 OM603 Garrett T30 was a .50 compressor, no documentation on that though.

Seems that most (if not all) '86/'87 OM603s came with the KKK K-25 turbo originally. Many were replaced with the alternate Garrett T-30 when the trap-ox campaign was done, some with a new KKK, some didn't get replacements.

I don't know why these all combined into one reply but here they are:

KKK K-24 from '87 300D with ARV

Garrett AirResearch T-30 .50 trim w/ ARV from '87 300D (after trap-ox campaign)

Garrett T-30 .55 trim w/o ARV from '91 350SDL / OM603.970

MOD_EDIT:Be sure to click the "insert into post" button so it puts the pics where you want them instead of lumping them all together. The reason they all combined is the anti-double-post mod installed on the forum. Wink

A few weeks ago I had an really huge John Deere licenced VNT turbo in my workshop which had failed.

In fact, I didnt even know that kkk produces such big VNT devices with classic "nozzle ring/ vane assembly" VNT mechanism. It also has a full functional anti surge compressor housing.

This damn actuator is almost as big as a "normal" GT1749V , unfortunately the badge on the kkk turbo is not readable anymore, so I dont know yet which turbo this is in detail....

I'll get the facts on my setup soon.

I'm running a om617a with a 722.1 auto.

I have a HY35 off a 98 cummins 5.9 auto.

9cm housing
Compressor inducer: 54mm
Compressor exducer: 78mm
Turbine wheel: 58/65mm

I get 10psi 2500 then it goes up to 20psi at 5000 rpm.
With a w115 intake and the intercoolet I see 1200° max egt and it actually goes down with speed. It runs around 1.05:1 drive pressure to boost at these levels.

No prob!

I am so anxious to see how it does on the healthy engine going into my Maroon D! Getting an Intercooled 115 manifold setup from Rudolf, and will be turning up the Torque capsule and high idle screw all at the same time. Should be exciting!

Yeah probly Chad lol. I have CRS. I went to get some gaskets and stuff and he said "oh I have another one of those here" Yeah man it looked done... Guess we both asked about ceramic coating the turbine housing haha. He told me no too. Guess there's just a tone of work to do it and it wouldn't be worth the effort. She looked tits though dude. You'll be way happy with it. Looked like the turbine housing was painted black? I just saw it for a second

Im not sure on this I dont have a tach hooked up yet. And I would say that it doesnt spool up quite as fast but it feels much better at higher RPMs but the difference in lag is minimal I'd say and well worth the extra top end performance.

Just want to show what is possible width the Holset HE341VE on a OM606 width myna pump. i have just adjusted the alda to give more fuel, as it has got way to little fuel at low load. video is made width no smoke but on the limit to smoke.
I now almost get 1 bar boost at 2000 RPM
and 2 bar at 2550 RPM, this test is made in 5 gear width converter locked to hold the RPM down to measure this.
Here is the video

So it looks like a 60 trim comp wheel is the way to go with a stock garrett T3? I am not liking the idea of it taking longer to spool though since it already takes long enough, so is there anything that can be done about that? Also is it possible for one to just rebuild the turbo themselves, or are all kinds of fancy machines and equipment needed?

-1982 300D Turbo, 280k miles, ALDA apparently maxxed, fram 8038, 12 lbs boost, non-egr manifolds, W/M injection, 4 brake light mod, Gen II w126 front rotors/calipers, 4-speed swap
In the works: A/W IC, adjust pump, turbo rebuild (w/60 trim comp wheel)
-1980 300SD, 110k, project car. Goal is to get it lookin' like it did on the showroom floor (body and interior wise, not necessarily under the hood )
