Ill give them a call when im off work. Im also going to check my local CL to see if there are any parts car availble.

so i found out today that models from 78 to 82 had their fenders glued on and the best method to remove them is to heat them up and take them off.

So after about two days, I finally got the fender off with some serious consequences.

One seriously messed up fender thats

Chill out ... not that bad. Period.

Invest a few bucks and pressure wash everything and get it surgically clean. Costs: About $10 bucks and some labor hours. Then, I would get a dolly or something similar and start straightening out the metal. Not a biggie and its just a few labor hours. Loosen up the 13mm hood bolts and straighten the hood. You have less than one day's worth of work to that point.

Fenders: I went to the yard and no W123s. The sunny South has plenty of rust free donors. I am thinking our P-A-P wants around $35 bucks a fender. Shipping is a PITA, but doable. Even with 2 new fendors ... you got less than $100 bucks on your hands and you're fixing some screwed up fenders anyways.

So, my advice is take a step back, take a breather, and start cleaning up the project. 75% of the battle is simply cleaning and sorting out the problems. Once you get to that phase, most of the other stuff falls into place. Good job with sticking thru the process and getting the fenders off. Most folks would have quit. Smile.

You guys are always the voice of reason. It was a pain in the ass to get that thing off but i did it.

Ill probably powerwash maybe wednesday and start straightening out the metal. I should have all the tools. All I need is some patience.

I am in no rush to get the fender at this point. if You cant get it in the same color. no problem, I know someone who can repaint it for a good price.

just got off the phone with a Mercedes part dealer.

they want $330 shipped from California for a genuine Mercedes fender. A little pricey.

If you can wait, I would find a pristine used one, same color. That is IMO the way to go. No painting and a lot cheaper. Even a color matched fender in pristin condition is only $75 smackers on FleaBay ...

I havent had any luck finding fenders on eBay. and the only ones I did were $150 all with dings and rust on them.

I am a little lost finding these things

You are 100% right. The weather is great! Shit happens i guess. Nothing I can do about it, other then I learned from my mistake.

Is there any type of reference i can find, maybe someone can take pictures of what a straight body looks like, so I can compare/

for those horribly glued on fenders, what I did on my 1980 240 was using an angle grinder, I cut a groove along the top of the rusted out fender all the way to the front. I was then able to remove the whole fender pretty easy, and after that slowly with a box cutter peeled off the glued on inner portion.

Was still a PITA, but it did preserve the straightness of the inner fender, which was also seriously rotten.

Like said above, all you need to do is bash this sucker out to a more or less straight line, then carefully rework the gap with the hood when you have a replacement fender.

In the meantime, someone may want the one your took off for OEM patch material. Id hold onto it until you have a new fender, the fact that it isn't rusted means you can use pieces of it to possibly repair a rusted fender if thats all you can find.
Also, all the movement may have opened a gap or crack in the sealant on that inner fender. Before you permanently attach a new fender, id probably closely inspect and wire wheel off any cracked areas and repaint and rubbercoat just in case. All this work would be a shame if the inner fender started to rot out on you

IM not sure why they put such a thick coating of glue. I now realized why the person who painted this fender before did such a lousy job. well they could have done a good job but being a pain to remove probably didnt help.

I have a can of undercoat. I am going to remove any rust and whatever else is there. prime it and give it a coat of undercoating.

in the meantime, ill save up for a decent fender.

-1982 300D Turbo, 280k miles, ALDA apparently maxxed, fram 8038, 12 lbs boost, non-egr manifolds, W/M injection, 4 brake light mod, Gen II w126 front rotors/calipers, 4-speed swap
In the works: A/W IC, adjust pump, turbo rebuild (w/60 trim comp wheel)
-1980 300SD, 110k, project car. Goal is to get it lookin' like it did on the showroom floor (body and interior wise, not necessarily under the hood )

ill have to check that out, on mine, it wasn't just the glue, it was over an inch of vinyl undercoating sprayed inside the wheel well. Heat gun, wire wheel, none of that stuff worked that well on that thickness from that angle.

Id be interested to see what dieselgiant's solution was, but I just finally cut the sucker off and started shaving the crap off with a box cutter. I remember feeling the sort of rage purplecomputer has shown here. Big Grin

EDIT- Naa, he just unbolts and removes a fender from an 83 no problems, unless there is another pictorial with a glued on fender.

here is an example of what dieselgiant did not deal with. With all bolts out, this fender still had inches of vinyl holding it to the inner fender. up front it was almost 2 inches thick. That crap was tenacious-

So i spent the day just looking and figuring out how the hood was misaligned as it didnt make sense to me

sure enough its all bent up, I removed it and took this picture.

heres the old compared to the new, I went with the EMPI ones becuase if i ever have to do this job again I just unscrew some bolts off the axle and replace it, no more having to drop the differential, open it up....and such

the differential itself was really clean, I took a flashlight and visually inspected for chips and wear but nothing, I am happy about that at least

probaby two hours later from that point here are the axles installed

maybe tomorrow or monday I will fill it back up with gear oil and mount it. from there I will work on the breaks.

hey where did you buy the empi axles? I was just reading up on how you can remove the CV joint from the shaft so you can replace the boots without stretching them over the cans.

I want to get a set.

after 1983 they stopped gluing the fenders on so get a later fender it will be in better shape and easier to put back on

So some update guys. This car will now be my daily driver pretty soon. returning the lease due to some recent events.

anyway, while i wait for greazzer to get me the fender I was thinking about using my racor filter again.

I had ideas about replacing the stock one with the racor.

this is the filter in question.

will I be able to do the same hose hookup as the stock? it has two ins and two outs, just like the stock filter.

I realized the other I have no idea what Im doing. I think I fucked this car up more then I actually have fixed it.

Im just gonna get it up and running and leave it alone forever

Racor generally does everything in 3 micron ratings. 2, 10, and 30. (unless its a big FBO or recirculation product or whatnot for fuel dispensers or ships, irrelevant here though)

The 3 micron ratings are color and letter coded. 2 micron will usually have an "S" somewhere in the part number and have burgundy coloring. For example, 2020SM.
10 micron will usually have a T in the part number with blue coloring. 2020TM.
30 micron will usually have a P in the part number, and the coloring is usually red. 2020PM.

What you have there LOOKS like an old Racor 400 series filter head, with a wix filter screwed onto it. However, does it say RACOR anywhere on the head itself? self priming heads are not especially rare. Could be something else. My Racor catalog is circa 2010, but you have 4 filter options if its a Racor head. (If you want 2micron) R45S, R60S, R90S, and R120S. The number is the flow rate, the letter is the micron. lower number usually means a smaller filter.

Since its a wix filter though, my Racor catalog gives these numbers as cross reference for that part number, any of these should be able to replace your current filter and at least have the same threads, some will take the bottom clear bowl, some will be solid metal. The threads are 1-14 UNS.

Wow, thanks for the information JB3. When i bought it off eBay it came with a Racor filter, so I just assumed... I could be wrong though.

I just feel as if though I have done more harm then good to the car. whenever I look at much nicer w123 on the web i feel so silly for trying all these mods and what not.

you have a working 240D turbo. There are a handful of those out there, and YOU made it happen. Dont get cold feet after all that work. You just have a to slam a fender on there and a few other things.

If anything, you've made yourself aware you dislike bodywork.

I had similar problems on my 240d when changing the fenders I just beat/hammered the inner fenders until they where close the only part I was careful with was the fender as its the only part that really shows. I also used washer between the fender and body to get the gaps just right.

I just keept fitting the fender and seeing what needed work. then out came a short piece of 2x4 and sledge hammer after it was close I used washers for spacing there is usually a little pay in the bolts so I would line every thing up with 2 bolts one on the front and one on the back open and close the hood to see if i was close. also if I needed to bend the lip I used a pair of channel locks or vice grips to straighten it out. It took me a couple hours to get it in the neighborhood. Once I got it close then it was easy to get it perfect or at least as good as factory Big Grin

my 300sdl was a real bear because it was hit on the front. And i had to straighten out the fender structure and replace the radiator support

Put the fender on the car. Most of it lines up pretty well. Some heating and bending should fix any issues I have.
