Hey Guys,

Work continues on my Unimog. I now have to deal with a problem I really don't want to...

The engine (OM617A) in my Unimog only has a few thousand miles on it, it was bought new from Mercedes in Germany...so I'd like to try to fix this. The bolt that holds on the crankshaft pulley assembly is broken off...I bought the truck like this and no, I don't know how it happened. Dodgy Motor is perfectly fine though, runs good.

So, do I:

1.) Attempt to use a huge ez-out and some heat or... something... to remove the old bolt?

6.) Forget the broken bolt and find an alternate method of attaching the crank pulley?

24.) Go buy a $500 300SD off craigslist and use that motor? Tongue

Huh

How do you know the engine is new? Did the bolt break while you had it?
Old high mileage 617A's tend to run pretty well but a new or newly rebuilt one from factory or from Metric Motors will be really expensive and worth a lot. So if it is new and the crank bolt was broken from something like a fork lift bump while it was on a pallet and you're sure other parts aren't damaged, then I think it would be worth fixing it proper. You could buy a bolt extractor kit (it won't be cheap) but will be much cheaper than buying another engine. or you could hire a professional bolt extractor to come and remove it (or take it to them) Most industrial centers where there's heavy manufacturing tend to have specialists who do that sort of thing and do house (shop) calls.

Also check the harmonic balancer and front main seal for damage or rotation on the shaft. The pulley might also be bent - check it for trueness.

Good luck!

I have a receipt somewhere. Truck was built by a Belgian engineer living in Germany, and then the next owner imported it to the states where shortly after it caught on fire (small fire, all electronics toast though). That's where I picked it up.

I'll check over the listed things. Thanks for the input!
