Hemmings reported about 5-cylinder diesel engine from a w116 300SD with a few mods in the 1970s = 200 mile per hour vehicle

Challenge to DieselMeken: can you & crazy diesel performance Finns put together a package for a 2014 or 2015 Group Buy inspired by world's first 200 MPH diesel super car: http://www.hemmings.com/hmn/stories/2009/01/01/hmn_feature19.html

In time for Gatebil 2015?

RE: Challenge for STD members - MFSuper90 - 11-30-2013

I find it hard to believe they slapped a intercooler on it turned the boost up to 30psi different cam and BAM! They have 230hp.

Anybody else having trouble grasping that? All I'm missing is the cam, and I'm 100hp behind them! Haha

RE: Challenge for STD members - sassparilla_kid - 11-30-2013

Well first off, a w123 probably has like 14x as much drag as the C111, that thing also had probably 10 forward gears, and I bet it probably had like 8-10mm elements from the Bosch factory itself

RE: Challenge for STD members - Greazzer - 11-30-2013

Yes, that was a om617.952a engine, but reduce most of the drag, get rid of bunch of weight, boost fuel and air ALOT, and some other tricks of the trade, and yes 200 mph. Is it just a cam and some more boost ? I highly doubt that.

Here's a picture of the modified 3.0 liter 5-cylinder engine bay ...
Hard to believe this 1970s turbo-charged diesel capable of 200 MPH ...

Jesus, this is an article by a journalist, not by a diesel tuning guru ffs, give it a break... Smile

RE: Challenge for STD members - sassparilla_kid - 11-30-2013

I wonder what trans they used, and where can I get one

RE: Challenge for STD members - 300SD_KY - 11-30-2013

The car is on display at the Mercedes museum in Germany… Any forum members nearby?

And can they please discretely steal the camshaft out of it and send it my way? Big Grin

RE: Challenge for STD members - raysorenson - 12-01-2013

I read another article by a journalist that rode in an OM617 powered C111. The driver was instructed to make no sudden moves to the L or R because of all the cars on the circuit that were travelling at a much higher speed. Acceleration was weak with the 200mph gearing and a high speed was not reached on the test drive. Sounds pretty lame to me.

RE: Challenge for STD members - MFSuper90 - 12-01-2013

So basically, they made it to 200mph, but it took a VERY long time :p

RE: Challenge for STD members - 300SD_KY - 12-01-2013

I wonder how many drivers make sharp turns over 125 MPH?

RE: Challenge for STD members - Austincarnut - 12-01-2013

it had dry sump, custom injection pump, mid/rear engine, low drag coefficient, overdrive, etc.... Their car did make those numbers, a production/mod'd turd engine, w123? 30+ years later? no way! don't forget about the same time they were playinging with the rotary engine in the same chassis, sold off to mazda!

RE: Challenge for STD members - Simpler=Better - 12-01-2013

Ported head & bigger valves (couple hundred)
Custom cam($400ish?)
Bigger pump ($1200ish)
Bigger turbo (varies)

Unless you have a C111 chassis in stock the gearbox is useless for you....

I live 20 miles away....

was taken outside, in front of the museum at a special presentation day where I didn´t have time to visit the museum. Angry

Normally you don´t get any closer than being 5 meters away from the C111.

You are right, for example the indicated boost in the article is wrong. For the C111 stage 1 engine the boost is specified at 45psi!

RE: Challenge for STD members - MFSuper90 - 12-04-2013

I thought rods started bending at 30+psi in a 617?
Unless they had custom rods or lowered compression?

If I was building an all-out racecar I would definitely use custom rods

The engine had custom rods + custom pistons + lowered compression to 1:19
