Removing Oil Thermostat - Torkey - 07-13-2013

I'm considering removing the oil thermostat out of the oil filter housing.
The reason I am considering it is because this is an endurance race car and if it failed not having the oil cooler would be a significant issue.
Has anyone done this before?

How many of these fail, ever?

Also, you may find that the design uses the thermostat to direct flow, thus without the thermostat only a fraction of the flow goes the long way out to the cooler.

In one of my cars, it failed. the oil cooler never got hot, or even warm.

Do you want the oil to always flow through the cooler?

I had mine all apart when I modified it for my 201 project. I do not see why the thermostat could not be removed and a part machined up that simulated the thermostat in cooling mode and installed so as far as engine knows the thermostat is still there.

Yes, we were thinking of having the oil always going to the cooler.
If if failed shut during a race it would be bad for us.

I would make a new piece to replace the thermostat then, that way the system is working how it was designed to (no surprises), and it eliminates your concern.

The thermostat screws in, and as I recall it took a bit of torque to brake it loose.

Make sure you're monitoring oil temp too

The oil filter housing I removed from an '85 motor to mod for an engine swap didn't work.

The oil not reaching operating temps is also not a good thing. Were it my car, I would monitor oil temps and make repairs as necessary.

Here's a dumb question. The oil without any thermostat should reach at least 180-200 F no matter what. If that assumption is correct, then why would that be bad ?
