RE: Intercooler picture thread? - winmutt - 10-14-2013

Would a spal move enough air? We spend a few weeks in the 100F + down here and while I tolerated a summer of it I plan on fixing it this winter. Can't lose the AC.

Let know more how that works, i moved from Atlanta to Phoenix its a little hotter out here. I want to do Spals also.

RE: Intercooler picture thread? - raysorenson - 10-16-2013

Alternator output will be the limiting factor with electric fan installation.

Winmutt, have you verified that your local SCCA group will not let an aftermarket A/W setup on a course? I've heard that this is an often overlooked rule. It should be dropped from the rulebook.

RE: Intercooler picture thread? - winmutt - 10-16-2013

Tito what size IC is that? Where did you get it?

Ray I did verify. The exception is for cars that have them stock which is a pretty stupid exception IMO. Since the wheel upgrade and the last chin tuck I have not had any clearance problems.

RE: Intercooler picture thread? - sassparilla_kid - 10-16-2013

Captain America was running nothing but the stock aux fan when I rode in his car and it was the middle of the summer and it seemed to do alright, so any extra e-fans would be fine IMO

You only need the fan when moving below around 15mph or so I think, after that there's enough air moving through there that they're not needed

(10-16-2013, 05:36 PM)winmutt Tito what size IC is that? Where did you get it?

I actually don't know. I can measure if you want it? the outside diameter where the hose slides over is 60mm. That's the only thing I know about it.

I got it from a friend of my who works at a Volkswagen tuning shop. It was in the garbage bin but he took it home. Thinking he may use it some day. He currently building a BMW drift project and it's to small so he gave it to me. Made me very happy Big Grin I also got the 3" exhaust tube from him which i will be fitting underneath my car tomorrow with a Simons silencer.

It could be a home build IC, if i look at the welds. But the mounting holes tell me it's probably universal. I really don't know.

Spal is the best fan manufacturer on the market IMO they move the most air and are actually rated correctly. Ebay fans just spout some numbers off that look good and then shit on you while you're in traffic a week after installation... TRUST ME

(10-16-2013, 01:55 PM)raysorenson Alternator output will be the limiting factor with electric fan installation.

I have a 150 amp GM C144 (Bosch mount) alternator in my 300D now Big Grin

Yes, infact I dont really use the aux fan anymore. I dont use any fan really.... My car runs cool even when boosting hard for long distances. Shoot I cant even get the temp over 95°C! What helps is the I have 3 (IRRC) 3/16" hols drilled around the perimeter of the thermostat so water is always circulating through the radiator. It makes for long warm up times, if you have a fan you cant control, but since I turn mine on and off at will, things work great.

RE: Intercooler picture thread? - 300SD_KY - 02-13-2014

i've got a 1979 300SD, same body style as this ... would love the air dam = natural fit for an IC.

can anybody say who made the air dam on this: http://phoenix.craigslist.org/evl/cto/4281707742.html

RE: Intercooler picture thread? - MFSuper90 - 02-13-2014

That air dam looks badass!

Front mount Air to Air intercooler on w123, OM617A

23.75" wide
13.5" tall
3" thick
2.5" inlets both on the bottom

RE: Intercooler picture thread? - sassparilla_kid - 06-04-2014

What about a shaker hood for intercooler? Or maybe louvres or something

RE: Intercooler picture thread? - raysorenson - 06-05-2014

Massive heat soak. Check the scoobaroo forums. They're all jumping through their assholes to get a good FMIC, like led-panzer's.

RE: Intercooler picture thread? - Tito - 11-26-2015

Does anyone know if the w124 electric coolant pump for the cabin heater flows enough for a water-cooled intercooler?
I highly doubt it, but I can't find anything affordable for a decent price. I have one of those typical intercooler from ebay like this:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Liquid-Water-to-Air-Universal-Intercooler-I-O-2-5-/180647933624?hash=item2a0f74b6b8:g:Ii4AAOxygPtSy7r9&vxp=mtr

The inlet for the intercooler is about 18mm with the fitting screwed in. About the same as the pump inlet / outlet.
So how do you guys make it work? I saw Captain America has almost the same I have but I can't find any info digging thru his thread.

They might work ok but I have not tried it yet. Haven't got mine plumbed with water. I have flow tested the pumps and they do flow a good amount but not much pressure so not sure how well they will work without testing in the car. My thought is they just help in a system that is already in circulation with mechanical pump. Dunno how they will do on its own.

I may just get a purpose built pump like this one. These guys make some of the best race starters and water pumps on the planet

RE: Intercooler picture thread? - MFSuper90 - 11-27-2015

I am using a pump off of a supercharged mustang. It's a bosch pump, costed about $100 brand new if I remember correctly.

Fun thread this one.

Recipe is a custom ordered Dieselmeken 8mm injection pump set to 230cc and 7600rpm  Cool

Runs our new drop in valve springs and 150bar injectors. The turbo is a Holset HE351W Billet #14 and the lot will be mounted in a Ultra4 race car in the UK.

Looks awesome right!

Here's my IC setup.  It's far better than no IC. I've changed the air routing since this pic and switched the intake sections around for better cooling of the IC.

Here's a test Lingenfelter's kid did on water pumps for IC's. He seems to think more flow is better, and his last name may as well be Horsepower. The Bosch one is the one used on Fords and probably Mercedes too.

RE: Intercooler picture thread? - Tito - 11-28-2015

Thanks. That helped me. I think I'll just give it a try since I already have the Bosch pump laying around. Going to do some tests with temperature measurements.

RE: Intercooler picture thread? - merc85 - 01-08-2016

Im thinking about the 211 v6 cooler in the I6 as its a little bigger

[Image: 12510389_10153578554152284_7123800477030...e=5702CBA0]

The 1st one is the V6 cdi, the 2nd is the I6 , the v6 has the thicker core despite being a little shallower.

RE: Intercooler picture thread? - Sultzi - 01-09-2016

I don't like intercoolers which are shining through front of the car. Or very low and coming through the front bumber on so on.

Here's example how I did it on my ex daily driver w123 (sorry for bad pictures).

is there any intercooler that fits between bumper and radiator on 190 2.6l front? i have a 300d radiator under the top frame so the intercooler should be not more that 45-50mm thick... 450x450 max dimensions.  Huh
curentlly running with cut bumper but the cops got some sort of sickness on me... dont know why  Big Grin Big Grin

RE: Intercooler picture thread? - winmutt - 10-06-2017

Its a 190 but this kinda confirms a long time fear I've had about the AMG front spoilers and intercoolers. Won't fit:

How much boost can that sabb blackstone intercooler take? It's that or the renault one for me.

RE: Intercooler picture thread? - g wizz - 08-07-2021

full 3" ic piping, i forget the dimensions of the IC but its not that big, but it gets good air flow and thats what really matters. pretty hard to heat soak something if your moving and its constantly cooling. in my opinion ambient temps and air flow are more important than core size. tho you need core size to shed heat as well but it also provides drag for incoming airflow, so its all a trade off.
here are some.

probably not more than double what ever the stock max boost is. it looks plastic and that alone says not much more than 20psi if even that.
