Need new transmission - w123love - 11-01-2011

So its official. I need a new auto trans. Last friday I attempted to pull a 180 on a two way street and just barely didn't make it. Nonetheless I had to reverse to get out of there....no bueno. I knew it was going to be embarrassing, but not as bad as what happened.

The car didn’t even go into reverse. Rev up, down, sideways it didn’t matter the damn thing wouldn’t go anywhere. Had to have two big dudes help me push it backwards in order to correct my turn and park.

This wasn’t the first time it had happened, but it was definitely the worst. I had the trans previously looked at, and they adjusted it as much as they could to have it catch and go in reverse. It worked for about two weeks, then eventually slipped back away. It is a 722.3x so that means no external reverse band adjustment Undecided. Not in my best interests to get in there and attempt to adjust it myself.

The other problem is the horrid first gear slip. I’ve gotten used to revving to 3000 off the line, letting off to engage at 2200, then eventually the car starts to move. Then we slam into second and all is well with the world.

So in conclusion I need a new trans. 99% positive its a 722.3x so wondering what my options are for a replacement?

Also side note I won’t be putting it in myself....I’ll have a shop do it.

I'd say if you were doing it get a junkyard trans. It's going to get expensive having a shop do it. Most people think a trans is voodoo and black magic and don't touch them so the "specialty" shops charge extra.

What part of SoCal you in? I have a few friends at transmission shops.

Thanks for the info Jesse....i’m right next to the 5 in Mission Bay. The main reason I’d have to have it done at a shop is I have no space to do it. No room in the garage anymore! I’d consider renting a service bay on base if I could get my hands on a lift, but that could be a stretch.

the gods have chosen you for a manual swap. Big Grin

There's a place that does that down the street from my shop. Never been in there of checked it out before it I've been curious DIY garage iirc in escondido. I have a friend that rebuilds transmissions in San Marcos too.
I wish I had a lift at my place.
I used to work down there and my step dad keeps his boat in mission bay.

Want my old trans? (722.315) I think it may have just barley started to flare on the 1-2 shift when hot but the engine was going south at the same time so I was just taking it easy

I'm in Riverside.

RE: Need new transmission - DanielK - 11-04-2011

sounds like the band that locks 1st gear in is worn, or the plunger has a blown seal. The reverse problem is probably just a missing rubber grommet on the shifter linkage. If it doesn't click into reverse, it wont go into reverse. You should look into that first. You can force some rubber hose in there or buy the proper grommet for like...35cents. lol

I replaced both of the shifter linkage bushings when I first got the car, had to go all the way to “L” to get into “D” before that! Lol. So I know those are good. What is this plunger you speak of?

RE: Need new transmission - Hercules - 11-05-2011

Bands are applied by pistons. Pistons are serviceable on outside of transmission These pistons (plungers) have a small shaft that breaks. No need to remove trans. Use bent style pry bar, against body. Ck out before just replacing trans. Good luck.

RE: Need new transmission - w123love - 11-05-2011

Thanks Hercules i’ll check that out as well as research what I can still do outside of the trans.

RE: Need new transmission - w123love - 11-07-2011

Just and update

After some research, I am tossing around the idea that it is the B-2 piston which is causing problems. Apparently the 722.3XX has had this as a common problem, and there was a new B-2 piston made to correct the problem.

This helps with the going forward issue, but still hurting on the reverse problem.

I have a trans from a 1983 that has 180,000. miles on it. it ran when it eas removed from a wrecked car in palm springs a year ago. I have the trans at my house in Oceanside only 40 min. from you. I f you still need it . I'll sellit cheaper than you can think. Text me at 760-586-2674 Quinn I think its a 722.3.

by "lift" do you mean getting the car to the base? 'cause getting a lift at the hobby shop usually isn't too big of a deal during the week, but I've done all my tranny swaps in the driveway or in my garage...

RE: Need new transmission - w123love - 12-21-2011

Yeah I’ve got a new transmission now so I will be going to MCRD to do the work. I replaced the B-2 piston on base at the hobby shop. Pretty good asset for those who are able to access it.
