RE: Purple turbo 240D - ronnie - 08-21-2012

I've left mine uncovered, there is not a hole left, just a rod sticking up, so no real need to cover it. not that it would hurt to cover it though.

(08-21-2012, 05:36 PM)ronnie I've left mine uncovered, there is not a hole left, just a rod sticking up, so no real need to cover it. not that it would hurt to cover it though.

Ill see if I can get to it tonight if i dont fall asleep.

anyone want to give me an idle stop cable. their like $20 bucks new! Crazy!

some updates for today. The air filter bracket broke and Ive been driving around with a loud crazy rattling noise coming from the air filter hitting the intake manifold. I would like to keep it looking stock but when I had the air manifold made they removed the second hole to secure the air cleaner bracket to the manifold and for some reason I am not able to secure it to the bottom of the manifold, I think I may have stripped the inside so no bolt can ever grab to the threads. Maybe Ill steal forced inductions Idea. Any Idea on approximate cost for that?

Things I need to do

-Get the injectors serviced (which I should have had greazzer do months ago)
-Valve Adjustment
-IP Tunning with ronnie
-Fix the fuggin A/C (for next summer, I have all the parts so Ill slowly do that in the fall)
- get better speakers for the rear
- SUB WOOFA BABY!

RE: Purple turbo 240D - Greazzer - 08-22-2012

Air Cleaner Solution (s). You are looking at less than $30.00 bucks. As a suggestion, you can buy one of those cool looking cones at Autozone for $19.99. Get a rewards card and buy something for $1.00 to get the point. After 5 points, you get $20 bucks in merchandise. Anyway, back on the ball. Then, get a rubber reducer and piece of black PCV pipe from Lowes or Home Depot to make the 45 degree and to reduce from the turbo to the cone. An incredibly easy, cheap, and decent fix. Took about 5 minutes to do, and about 45 minutes running to the stores. And, it looks good. I know a lot of folks bash the cone, but I liked it and it worked out good for over 2 years and it did in fact improve performance. I suspect it was more air, et cet. Just an idea.

RE: Purple turbo 240D - Simpler=Better - 08-23-2012

If you don't like oiled cones (I don't on cars, do on motorcycles) you can get similarly sized paper cone filters at the parts store. Not trying to derail :p

by oiled cones you mean those K&N type filters that you have to clean? I hate those. I feel like they let in more junk. Had one before I totaled my TDI and the amount of crap in the air intake was upsetting. Ill stick to paper cones.

RE: Purple turbo 240D - larsalan - 08-23-2012

I am doing the 90 bend of abs/pvc tube to a fram 8037 or 8038
just slightly more trouble than the cone right onto the turbo.
I have preferred the smaller 8038 as the 8037 is really jammed in there. The 8038 has more folds than the 8073 so it's supposed to have close to as much surface area for air to get through.
I'm not sure but I'm with you on those oil cone things. Might just as well use a piece of window screen.
there is a thread on that fram 8038/8037 thing but it is really not that much to it. Can be done for like under $30. including a filter

that is the way mine is. But I think that's the bigger of the 2 different models.

RE: Purple turbo 240D - Simpler=Better - 08-23-2012

Yup that's the one I ran on mine. After 20 it was still good when I scrapped it

what is going on here? Big air filter attached to some sort of cooler attached to some custom manifold?

what is the black thing coming off of the valve cover, that's the oil separator line, is it some sort of valve? then the orange thing is the drain back down to the oil pan?

RE: Purple turbo 240D - willbhere4u - 08-24-2012

The thing on the valve cover and in the line are air oil separator's to separate oil vapor out before the turbo inlet

There is an air to water inter cooler above the turbo before the intake manifold.

thanks for the heads up!

RE: Purple turbo 240D - Purplecomputer - 08-26-2012

I bought a re manufacture Master cylinder for $40 bucks at AutoZone Today. My old one was the original and was leaking fluid everywhere!

I sucked out the fluid inside the booster and installed the new part

I also replaced the hose going from the reservoir to break pedal since that hose was leaking and was cracked at the tips not allowing a proper connection

my pops helped me bleed the breaks and my car is now safe to drive!

We did notice however that the front passenger wheel was soaked in brake fuild! I suspect a faulty caliper but we took it for a drive and took the wheel off again and there was no leaks... Ill be keeping an eye out.

Also I did loose the cap for the reservoir so my dad just found one that fit. No need to spend more money then I have to!

Tomorrow After class I will swap out the air filter, Adjust the valves and prepare my injectors to be sent out to mark for a rebuild. Im also going to be removing the ADA in hopes that I get some more fuel and also do some cleaning or wires and hoses in the engine bay cause its a little messy at the moment.

RE: Purple turbo 240D - Greazzer - 08-26-2012

I received them in the mail on saturday. Since its raining today All I got to do was start my new Air filter mod, Half way done though.

I am using the FRAM 8083 (im lucky i even found it @ the auto part) and I am using 3 inch PVC piping. Its coming out great.

Tomorrow I will do all the injector stuff and fix the idle cable issue.

Not much of a teaser if I finish the project the same day I uploaded those pictures.

heres the finished result.

I drilled hose for the oil return thing a majig and a hole for the vacuum line.

I also found the idle stop cable in a creavas in the engine and fixed dat shit too. NO MORE RATTLING OR ROUGH IDLE!!! YAYAYAY

RE: Purple turbo 240D - Cole - 08-29-2012

that looks awesome, whats the idle stop cable and what does it control?

RE: Purple turbo 240D - Purplecomputer - 08-29-2012

(08-29-2012, 01:38 PM)Cole that looks awesome, whats the idle stop cable and what does it control?

im not sure on the 617 but on the 616 I have an idle knob on the dash board that is tied to a cable that is then connected to the throttle linkage. the cable goes through an opening and then has a metal ball that gets screwd onto the end. You can adjust where the ball sits on the cable to adjust the idle.

Its weird, I know but without it the car idles very low so you need to use this to give it some gas.

oh it's that thing...

allegedly they had that on the wagons too, but neither of mine have that knob on the dash.

i wouldn't mind retrofitting that in to mine, i think that would be great to have when i start it in the morning in the middle of winter

RE: Purple turbo 240D - Greazzer - 08-29-2012

I love it .... black spray paint on your hands .... nitril gloves are the best trick.

RE: Purple turbo 240D - Purplecomputer - 08-30-2012

I hate this car,

Tried to do a valve adjustment, Nothing went right. I also have a bad temper and the patience of a toddler so that didnt help.

Ive decided that I am going to move on and get another car. I am looking at TDI's since thats what I originally wanted and not a Mercedes diesel.

Ill be listing it on ebay and other sites within the next few days or I might trade it in at the dealer for a new/used car.

RE: Purple turbo 240D - willbhere4u - 08-30-2012

Good luck TDI engines are great! But every thing else VW sucks! electrical connectors and plastic and materials are a lot cheaper and need constant attention. Glove box doors and center consoles always falling apart tail lamp connectors burning up! and the list goes on.

My advice keep the benz you will have a hard time selling it for what you have in it. Plus its a great spare car they can sit for a very long time with no maintenance and when you need it it's there and ready

RE: Purple turbo 240D - Simpler=Better - 08-30-2012

List the 240 on here....what do you have in it?

RE: Purple turbo 240D - sassparilla_kid - 08-30-2012

Noooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

RE: Purple turbo 240D - Greazzer - 08-31-2012

BTW -- what makes you think a different car will have no problems or never have problems. Or, if it does have problems, those "problems" are easy fixes or fun whereas your present project is no longer fun or easy ? The grass always seems greener & brighter ...

I will give a story or lesson learned in the last year from my experience. Wife's car, the beleagured 2001 Olds Intrigue GLS has a HORRIBLE reputation ... a garage queen ... a profit center's mechanic's wet dream. Well, after 230K MILES, still runs GREAT ! Has a bunch of leaks and other issues I have ignored or put band aids on when I am looking at a weekend and less than $200. Pretty piss poor on my behalf. Looking back, yes, the car had a few blips on the radar but nothing major or nothing more than maintenance plus and odd ball thing here and there. Last October, the dreaded overheating and cross over tube repair. Parts $25.00 and proposed labor $1,500.00. That is a project to come for me. Or, HVAC controls. $1,800 or just .50 cents of vacuum tubing. In October, got the wife a 2011 Camry, brand spanking new. Very very nice car. BUT, not as nice as the Olds. What now? Wife wants me to find time and fix all the buggers in the Olds and do all possible maintenance and RR just like our beloved Mercedes and sell the 2011, even at a loss. So, the moral of the story is that the grass is not always greener and a problem here and there may be better than new.

RE: Purple turbo 240D - Simpler=Better - 08-31-2012

Unless your rear main is leaking (and even then....) it is probably better to keep the 240.

But if you do stray, dear lordy don't trade it in. If you want an almost-0-maintenance, a pre 2000 I4 gasser Ford...

RE: Purple turbo 240D - Purplecomputer - 08-31-2012

I love the car but It just always puts me in a bad mood, and even with the turbo Its still slow. ( i like to drive fast) I do need to turn up the pump to give it even more power.

What i was thinking last night was to lease a TDI, My girlriend works at an auto mall (atlantic, their crooks but they wont rip me off if I go with her) I could probably get a new 2012 golf tdi for like $200 a month. Not bad considering my dad agreed to pay insurance for me, So I might do that and keep the 240 because just like you guys I know Im not getting my money back.

Im not going to post on here for a few days while I think. If I do sell it, I would rather sell it here to someone who will take care of her.

RE: Purple turbo 240D - Simpler=Better - 08-31-2012

As they say on the VW forums, if you want to go fast sell the TDI get a 2.0T. If you're a VW guy, a 2.0T. If you're a cheap ass, a 2.3T ford can be cranked up to around 200hp, but then you're still driving a crappy thunderbird/foxbody/ranger/pinto.

Actually, YOU NEED A MOTORCYCLE. Any 600cc sportbike from 89+ will spank most cars. And they're cheap. Hell, I have a few for sale Big Grin

Also, women will tackle you as you hop off it at school.

Anyone want to donate an old 300D so I can do an engine swap with a 617 turbo engine Wink Then Ill keep the car.

FUCK IT, ILL JUST TURN UP THE IP TILL IT EXPLODES

any screws i can turn on this junk to make it faster?

Also I cant remove the damn ADA. It just turns and turns and turns and turns and nothing.

also I was leaking fuel all over the place today, loose hose. Have no idea how that even happened.

RE: Purple turbo 240D - larsalan - 09-01-2012

yeah, man. You wouldnt feel 'slow' with a 617 turbo. Maybe cut the exhaust pipe and you'll sound fast too Wink
How much is a 617 motor at the JY?

Not sure but I would most likely need a donor car becuase I might need all new bits and pieces.

Found an article explaining how to enrich fuel load on a 616 pump. Im going to mess with that.

http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/99944-om616-617-injection-pump.html

The car is kinda overheating. My veggie gauge that monitors temps is reading 185 and thats driving 70mph any faster shoots up to 190 almost 200.

RE: Purple turbo 240D - larsalan - 09-01-2012

I wouldn't say 200 is over heating. water boils at 212. And I thought if you mix in that coolant glycol it would boil even higher.

RE: Purple turbo 240D - Purplecomputer - 09-02-2012

(09-01-2012, 04:32 PM)larsalan I wouldn't say 200 is over heating. water boils at 212. And I thought if you mix in that coolant glycol it would boil even higher.

Well if you think so then maybe I shouldn't worry. But I do want to flush out the coolant system. Even though this car was taken well care of (cosmetically) Alot of parts are still original (which isnt bad considering they have lasted so long) and general maintenance has been neglected.

The weather is getting warmer and I am cleaning my garage so I can work in an organized fashion. Right now everything is all over the place, its a mess! I was planning on getting a rolling tool car from HB so I can neatly have my tools next to the car while I work.

I am going to turn up fuel load sometime this week if it dosnt rain and see where the car is at, I also need to address the air leak in my WVO system. My boss is no longer paying for my fuel now that I only work on the weekends and I dont do any service calls so I need my WVO to save me money. He was putting in close to $200 worth of fuel a week for me.

RE: Purple turbo 240D - larsalan - 09-02-2012

Ya, on the 'overheating'. I would look at the actual temp as one factor using that 100c/212f as a high point and then also look at if the temp gauge is able to maintain whatever level it's at.
I had been seeing my gauge to read like just around that 85c. Then some stuff happened...
There was a coolant line that goes right over the oil filter housing leading to the heater core. Well, that blew out on the highway one day. So I clipped a piece of my draft tube and fit it in there. Then we were running real hot Wink like 100c on almost straight water.
Flushed out the system, replaced coolant/water. Then we are back between that 85c and 100c. Always like 90-92c.
Also, now the heater core is leaking Wink
Fucking mercedes benz. Anyhow, still runs at that 90-92c and never has to be topped off or anything like that.

Let's see what yours would do, keep an eye on your gauges and just look for things that are WAY out of wack. Then you know you're in a pickle Wink

OK...Voice of Reason Here..... STOP!!!!!!!!!!!......Take 20 steps back, close you eyes and breath!

Consider this before you TRY to do anything else... If you had trouble with the valve adjustment, (which is concerning as if the nuts are not tightened properly they will come loose! I bought a 300D that had two loose valve nuts), and you can't seem to get the ADA off, (which is fine, no offence intended), then you really should not open the Governor!

Take Ronnie up on his offer to help you out!!! I beg you!!! The car seems to be in very nice shape and with a turbo, PC mods, and a governor that is adjusted properly that car will out run 617a cars all day, and will sell very quick for reasonable money.

Not everyone is up to the level that these cars require, especially a modified one, that is OK, no shame...I can not stress that enough! Some of us have been doing this all our adult lives and tend to make it seem very easy, it is not by any means, don't take your frustrations out by destroying something that, at present, has value that will allow you to purchase a car that you will feel good about.

You have done a lot of good work to it, however you sound like a man on the edge... perhaps it is time to ask for help before you loose your balance and fall off the cliff.

I can guarantee you that if you let Ronnie work the magic, you will be giggling all the way home… I still giggle, yes literally giggle, when I step on the pedal of my 616 turbo, It is hard to believe it is the same engine.

Also as I went crazy today at work, I have decided I am going to buy a Sanden A/C compressor conversion kit for the car. Heard it was better and uses less HP.

Thanks, Hercules
