RE: Purple turbo 240D - Purplecomputer - 01-06-2012

(01-06-2012, 08:51 PM)ronnie I am making good progress on my turbo conversion. Couple of things to note. If you have the York a/c compressor it will not fit with a turbo conversion, you will need the newer r-4 gm compressor and bracket that mounts under the power steering pump on the drivers side.

throttle linkages will also need to be changed, notice your linkages come up through the intake/exhaust manifold. they will not fit once the turbo is on. I'll figure what I am going to do this weekend.

New engine is in now, just need to finish little stuff. Might take the complete exhaust off a 300, it's the easy way. Don't worry I do have two down pipes, so if you still want one I do have an extra.

Thats the last piece I need before I can start putting the turbo. I want to be able to have everything I need and do it in one day. Im super tight on cash and im saving my money because I still might be buying some euro bumpers.

Ill keep everyone posted. Let me know how it turns out with the throttle linkage as I was looking at that today as well.

RE: Purple turbo 240D - Purplecomputer - 02-22-2012

Finally some progress!

I made my dad make me a guage holder for the car. Hes way better at wood work then i am

We put it over a pot so the steam would soften the would so it would take shape to the ashtray. Tomorrow my dad will glue it and Ill get some vinyl to make it match the rest of the interior

RE: Purple turbo 240D - sassparilla_kid - 02-22-2012

Awesome, Im thinking about making one that hugs the steering column, that way I can keep the guages where I can see them

RE: Purple turbo 240D - Purplecomputer - 02-23-2012

(02-22-2012, 07:45 PM)sassparilla_kid Awesome, Im thinking about making one that hugs the steering column, that way I can keep the guages where I can see them

That would look cool but i wanted it to look like it came with the car so i removed thr ash tray Smile

RE: Purple turbo 240D - w123love - 02-23-2012

The bee knees would be one that could be hidden in the ashtray Big Grin

RE: Purple turbo 240D - sassparilla_kid - 02-24-2012

Unfortunately my ashtray gets used for ashes, and power for miscellaneous chargers and stuff when they are needed. Plus I want to have the guages right in front of me where all the other guages are so I don't have to go searching for them when I want to know what's up, like I have to do right now when I want to see boost

I get ya man. my radio has a built in USB so i power most of my stuff through there and i quit smoking so i dont need to dispose of my ashes anymore Big Grin

I really want to see what you come up with though

RE: Purple turbo 240D - sassparilla_kid - 02-24-2012

My radio has usb as well, although my ipod is perpetually plugged into it Rolleyes

As for the ashtray I like having the lighter there haha, and I don't really use it as much as my friends, unless I need to satisfy a cigar craving lol Cool

I'll post somewhere when I get my guages figured out Wink

RE: Purple turbo 240D - Purplecomputer - 03-23-2012

I spent a good day of my weekend replacing some old rubber Wink

The subframe mounts were a paint to get in and the rear differential mount wasnt any easier!

Two bolts, one on each side, broke in half while i was removing the mount forcing me to grind them out. Doing so cause me to make a bigger hole then I could use so my dad today went to the store and picked up some metal pieces to custom make me some new ones.

Hopefully he can finish it tomorrow since im down my daily driver and using my moms car for the moment. Its strange driving a gasser...NO NOISE! i felt like i wasnt turning on the car at one point.

once all the work is done with the mount ill be moving on to replacing the flex disk!

RE: Purple turbo 240D - Purplecomputer - 03-23-2012

a nice surpise when i came home, the front euro bumper came and so did the euro headlights!

I started unboxing them before i realized i should share this with you guys

ooh..

forgot to take pictures of the individual lamps

heres the inside of one, you can definately tell its not OEM quality but i dont fee as bad since its not some blacked out projector crap you normally find on fleabay

heres the bumper!

part numbers, so shiny!

and the only real damage on the bumper, good thing the license plate will cover that up

I plan on installing everything on sunday, of course if the weather allows me too.

RE: Purple turbo 240D - Purplecomputer - 03-24-2012

So i finally finished with the differential mount!

heres the new metal pieces my dad fabricated.

he even was able to make those edges

RE: Purple turbo 240D - Purplecomputer - 03-26-2012

I put on the front euro bumper yesterday and it was easier then i expected

im not used to the skinny bumpers so it just looks odd to me right now

The rust on the bottom front was a little worse then i expected but nothing i cant fix!

RE: Purple turbo 240D - w123love - 03-26-2012

I dig it. Def need a Euro plate for the front, then you’ll like it for sure. Are you going to put the rubber trim on? It surprisingly (to me) looks ok without it.

RE: Purple turbo 240D - Purplecomputer - 03-27-2012

the rubber trim is on, Is the trim supposed to be on top of the bumper because is underneath it right now.

RE: Purple turbo 240D - Purplecomputer - 03-28-2012

My day off! its going to rain here in NY so i figured i would swap the rear bumper before it does.

here is the bumper pulled off before i cleaned the bottom

here it is cleaned!

there were some rusty spots so i sanded them and sprayed primer and the i coated it with paint that matches the body color. I didnt want to post the finished result on that cause I messed it up but it looks better then rust

here is the finished result with the bumper on. I am pretty sure i messedd this up too because i didnt have the metal pieces which aligned the tips and There is to much space between the bumper and car.. take a look and let me know if i did it wrong

heres a shot from far away

i also was finally able to align the driver side door striker. no more slamming!

today was a good day

Yeah, take a look at other Euro W123’s.

RE: Purple turbo 240D - sassparilla_kid - 03-28-2012

Those bumpers look pretty awesome, now you just need to get your turbo conversion set up and those euro lights and you'll have one bitchin' mercedes!!

Im justing waiting on the HID kit to come in before i put those on and i just need a few more parts for the turbo conversion which i am working out with another forum member!

RE: Purple turbo 240D - Purplecomputer - 06-21-2012

WOAH! STATUS UPDATE GUYZ!11!

okay so,

Ive done a few things but havent really documented it

I put on the euro headlights, I love em!

Then There was some missing paint and stuff so I went to an auto body and got matching paint in a paint can and just covered it up with light layers, came out pretty good

Then I put in the chrome tail light trim, huge difference

thats really all ive done to date but BIG NEWS GUYZ!

I am installing or going to actually install my turbo this weekend! my parents will be gone for a week on a cruise leaving me their awezome toyota camry so I have a back up car in case all goes wrong

That place sells pretty much any connector you could need. I got new fittings and hoses for the transmission and engine oil coolers. Pretty economical to make your own instead of paying a hydraulic shop to do it for you.

They sell different types of hoses and fittings, some take clamps, some use 'aeroquip' push-on connectors that are super heavy duty. Get the ones you need clamps for, the aeroquip lines are "push on", but my arm isn't exactly a hydraulic press and getting everything together was a nightmare.

They also actually have customer service which is pretty rare these days, if you call them they will work out what you need.

I have the 300d oil line from the filter housing to the turbo thats what I will use and I already have an adapter made up for the turbo drain, thats all i really need for that, but if those hoses dont work out I will order something from this site since it looks very highquality

RE: Purple turbo 240D - sassparilla_kid - 06-21-2012

Awesome, looks pretty sweet dude, hope all goes well with the turbo swap! As long as the manifolds come off without too many problems then I think you will have it made in the shade

I am actually pretty worried about the whole oil lines as well as fabricating and getting the acceleration linkage working

RE: Purple turbo 240D - Simpler=Better - 06-22-2012

The oil lines are easy-get it all lined up, mark with a sharpie, and take it to a radiator shop for brazing. Best braze job I ever had done on my car cost me a whole $2.50. In a pinch you can run fuel injection line-it's rated for the 200psi or so that goes through. Ran my engine the last 2,000 miles that way.

Accel linkage is nothing.

Also, you need to paint this car purple now.

brazing? never heard of that, what does that mean?

RE: Purple turbo 240D - Simpler=Better - 06-22-2012

A step above soldering and one below welding. I used the stock oil line, cut it off, and had an extension of bronze line brazed on with a banjo fitting for my turbo.

Is that necessary for me? Ronnie who also did a 240 turbo conversion did not mention anything about that to me and we have been talking much about this and he has been giving me many tips

RE: Purple turbo 240D - Purplecomputer - 06-24-2012

Update

Yesterday was the first day

So far I took off the manifolds and the accelerator linkage

I was trying to take off the oil filter housing but I didnt really have the right tools. I took of the two big bolts conecting the main lines when i realized I could have saved an hour or two by just replacing the plate that holds the banjo bolt.

Tonight I will drop the oil pan, and install the piping for the turbo oil return. I will post some pictures tonight after some more work is done.

RE: Purple turbo 240D - Purplecomputer - 06-25-2012

Day two,

I droppped the oil pan and started to modify it to be able to take the oil return pipe i had gotten. So far I dont have a big enough drill bit so I sent my friend on a shopping list of tools and things to get.

I mounted the turbo manifold, and air intake and also replaced the exhaust/air gasket while I was at it and mounted the turbo. In this time the egt gauge broke Sad

Tonight I will try to finish all the oil lines reintstall the oil pan and start working on the throttle linkage.

You need a step drill. HF has them the cheapest, but any hardware store will carry them. They work wonders with sheetmetal.

If you're running a stock turbo you probably don't need to braze anything-I though you were going vnt or holset or something like that.

Ive been mostly working at night so I will take pictures of the car so far. I have to say the engine looks awesome with a turbo on its side, like a giant tumor of awesomness. Oh and the guage is fine but the probe is what broke, I left it on there while i was working and the weight of the manifold cut the wires right at the end of the probe so I cannot splice in new wire, I will have to replace the probe.

Step drill, never thought of that. I may have made a big doody with where i am going to put the oil return but if ronnie who has also put the turbo on a 240d and did it this way and it worked for him, I will trust him.

Edit: heres a little teaser, its a terrible photo but i wanted to get the spindle thing inside the turbo in the shot, which i wasnt able to do anyway

tried, when I got it, it was covered in oil because the forum member i bought it from shipped the oil filter housing in with as well and oil spilled all over the box! Usps would not deliver I had to drive into town to go get it.

yeah I wish I spent more time with it trying to make it work because now the new hose I had made is too long! the way I have it right now there are no kinks but i fear it will not get proper oil the way it is. RE: Purple turbo 240D - ronnie - 06-27-2012

There is an oriface in the turbo that restricts oil flow, so no need to worry about the hose, unless it really is kinked.
