RE: Purple turbo 240D - Jooseppi Luna - 02-18-2016

New voltage regulator doesn't seem to be making a difference Sad.  So I will be checking voltage directly at the alternator to make sure that there isn't a wiring issue, and, assuming the wiring is fine, replacing the alternator.

RE: Purple turbo 240D - Purplecomputer - 02-18-2016

I would probably get rid of that battery. Its a cheap-o pep-boys battery.

I have also had problems with that battery dying on my, prior to that I had one of those inerstate (The green ones) and that lasted me a while

(02-17-2016, 07:58 PM)Jooseppi Luna BTW, the sound system Purple put in this car is really nice!  It's honestly a shame the car is so loud, keeps you from appreciating the sound system Big Grin.

Once I get a 5-speed in there and a hood pad mounted, things should improve.

Certainly better then the 8 track it came with!

Oh, I put a NAPA battery in it on Monday.  That's all good.

Gonna try to swap in a spare alt I have lying around today.

RE: Purple turbo 240D - Jooseppi Luna - 02-20-2016

All right guys, update... and pics!

1) Turns out the charging issue is being caused by a loose tensioner.  I need to check it and make sure it's working... if not, I will have to grab one from the JY.

2) My exhaust leak has been caused by the spring clamp holding the header on to the manifold being sheared in two.  The exhaust pipe is literally not connected to the manifold.  It appears to me that the exhaust pipe is out of alignment with the manifold and the stress applied to the clamp as a result has been too much.  I have a spare clamp, just need to lower the header pipe by a little bit and install it.

3) Now the good news!!!  I was at the JY today and found a 1981 euro 280E!  I got a set of bumpers for $300 and a passenger's-side headlight for $50 (driver's side was gone).  Going to go back and try to break into the trunk to see if there is a warning triangle or other cool stuff there.  This is going to be one sick little car!  This is a pic of the donor from car-part.com:

Also, Purple, here is a picture of the glow plug wiring as it is now.  The upper circled wire is connected to the glow plugs, the lower circled wire is part of the original glow plug system.  When John and I were trying to start the car for the first time, the upper wire was loosely resting in the lower one.  Are they supposed to be connected to each other somehow?  Looking at pictures of other cars, it looks like there should be a fuse between them.  Can I just get an inline fuse and wire it in?

RE: Purple turbo 240D - Jooseppi Luna - 02-20-2016

Went out tonight, adjusted the steering box and started removing thespring clamp off of the exhaust. I think I'm going to just cut most of the bolts.

Looking back at the pics on page one it looks like the pipe mounting bracket after the expansion joint on the exhaust manifold was initially intact.  Check to see if this is snapped, which is a depressingly common problem.

Also check to see if the exhaust pipe mounting bracket off the gearbox is intact.  If thats disconnected the exhaust manifold bracket quickly snaps, you need both to keep things from breaking in that area fairly quick

Agh, sorry... do you have a picture of that?  Not sure what you're referring to...

Page one of this thread shows the cut down exhaust manifold.  the bracket i am referring to is a stainless job that bolts to the firewall side of the exhaust manifold approx cylinder #4

The downpipe bolts to this, and the expansion joint goes between this bracket and the turbo

I dont remember what I fucked up, but there should be a fuse between those wires. I have no idea why I did that hack job. Probably it was cold one morning, fuse was busted and I was a broke college kid, so thats what I did to get the glow plugs to come on and start the car.

its weird looking into that engine bay through pictures.

Sorry about the wiring mess.

That's fine, no problem Wink.  I think I can buy the fuse I need at NAPA and quickly wire it in.

RE: Purple turbo 240D - Jooseppi Luna - 04-18-2016

OK, got the correct fuse to connect the plugs and they work.  Also replaced the hood cable and latch, fixed the air cleaner mount that was being held in place by 1/3 bolts, and did some other small stuff (most of this was last month).

Just committed to the car big time by ordering $1000 in suspension parts.  Basically, I got all of the parts I will need to completely rebuild the suspension and steering systems, except for the parts that Purple already did.  I have my last final May 5th or 6th and can start work on this car after that.  Whooo!!!  In the meanwhile, it is serving me well as my daily driver.  I have put almost 1,000 miles on it since getting it and it has now been two weeks since I had to fix anything (not to say that there isn't plenty to fix, but it's not actively keeping me from driving the car Rolleyes).

RE: Purple turbo 240D - Jooseppi Luna - 04-18-2016

Oh, also, I didn't realize how long it was since I had updated this thread.

The exhaust system needs to be replaced.  Whoever welded the header onto the straight-pipe in the center welded it on at an angle, such that it can't bolt to the manifold without leaking.  I have the parts, just need the time.

I fixed the alternator tensioner, it took a little persuading but I got it put back together.

Also, here's a pic of the car morealess as it is right now.  I haven't mounted my euro bumper to the front yet because something there is misaligned and it doesn't fit...

Thank you for fixing this car up. It makes me really happy to see it on the road.

I'm glad!  The car really is a blast.  I passed some tuner Integra on a two-lane road on the way home tonight, felt frign' awesome Big Grin.

RE: Purple turbo 240D - Simpler=Better - 04-19-2016

I'm super glad this thing is still ticking!

But WHY haven't you painted it purple yet?!?!??!

What do you mean?  I already did.

I need to find one of these signs for the car...

(04-28-2016, 04:33 PM)Jooseppi Luna I need to find one of these signs for the car...

How did you end up with the rear end? Is it all straightened out?

Do you have plans of swapping out the differential? I think a diff off a turbo model would help with overall highway speeds. That was my plan.

Also, let me know when you get bored of the car one day. Ill buy it off ya!

Rear end still messed up, I bought two comealongs last weekend use for straightening it out.  Hoping to do it this weekend or next week... my last final is on Thursday.

I have a 717.400 5-speed... I'm going to swap that in and then see if I want a lower rear end (3.58 out of a 280E or 3.46 out of an OM617NA are what I'm considering).  I do appreciate the low first when I am on unmaintained dirt roads and for taking off from stoplights.

Not bored yet Big Grin.  But I will let you know if I ever do.  I like this car because it's perfect for back road/dirt road cruising, my favorite kind of driving.  I'll take a camera next time I head out and snap some pictures.

Would also be nice to see say a 3rd gear 40-90 and/or fourth gear 60-100  Big Grin

Sure, I can get on that.  That could be fun... although I'm not sure that there's a good place here to run up to 100 lol, or from 40 to 90.  I've gone from 80 to 90 on an uphill though.  Let me do a valve adjustment and fix the exhaust this weekend and empty my tools from the car as well as fix my brakes and I'll grab some vids.

I can tell you that a 4-cylinder Honda Accord can beat me without trying Tongue.

RE: Purple turbo 240D - Petar - 05-04-2016

I've meant 40-90 km/h not mph sorry for not clarifying Tongue

that's aboub 25-55 mph and 35-62 mph Big Grin

I might have a few diffs kicking around down here at JB3's parts storage facility when you get to that point.  If you are still looking for a spare, I have a plethora of wheels down here, including 4 bundts with mounted tires if you want them off my old wagon. What I do have however is a steel rim you can have if you want a matching steel wheel for a spare. I think theres a tires kicking around as well. I was about to recycle it, but ill put it aside if you want the rim.

car is looking good!

In the middle of replacing rotors, front calipers, master cylinder, and front suspension... but I have nothing left to do that can be done quietly, so I'm being forced to turn in Sad.  Tomorrow I can start again!
