makin' smoke's 300D - makin' smoke - 04-14-2011

My first diesel! Yes, this is the machine that started my addiction with diesel power. I was working at Walter's MB in Riverside CA. One morning( 2004 I think)I hear this turbo spooling up in the shop. I look up, and here comes a w116 300sd. I thought, "that is bad ass!" Turns out it lost its intake pipe. After that I had to have one. Soon after came up on the deal, 800 bucks. Salvage title, but I didn't care. Went through many fazes. big wheels, lowered, BIGGER wheels, even lower. Finally ended up with a set of R230 AMG 18's, which tucked perfectly. But after 2 sets of tires I was done. Went back to the 240D alum. And a flat black hot rod job. I commuted, traveled, towed, camped, anything and everything with this thing for years. Never 1 down. the best dollar ever spent. Built a little intake w/ oil separator, 3" down pipe, 3.5" all the way out, dynomax 18" straight through. Adla all the way out. last year the ol' lady was driving it to work and that's it. Got cut off and hit by a work van at freeway speeds. She was up around 500K on the OD. Still did its job. My 1 year old son was in the back seat and came out without a scratch. RIP
Sorry, these are the only pics I have.

Looks incredibly great. Make the new one better

No. Got out of the dealer scene. No advancement opportunities in a dealer.
I have already got 2 irons in the fire right now. The 83 300D and the euro 84 300D. The head is off the 83 and the 84 is the daily right now.
Here's a pic of the new 83'. Craigslist find.

That's the freight in the background. Haha
Here's some pics after the accident.

Check out how strong the passenger compartment was. The trunk smashed like a tin can, but the cabin was solid. All the doors were buckled though.

I love the look of that car!
Trimless, flat black, lowered, white walls..that thing looks bitchin.
What are your plans for the euro car?

These are great cars to get into a crash in.
Super safe.

I like the Freightliner

RE: [b]makin' smoke's 300D[b] - makin' smoke - 04-14-2011

0 to 50, its all me, but with the 4.97:1 final drive, I govern out at about 55 mph. Ill smoke a 240 in a drag though. Haha!
I wanted to chop and body drop the freight, that was the plan anyways. Found out its a prototype and there we're only 28 made between 72 and 73 and put down the sawzall. Just been hesitating for a few months. I don't know what I'm going to do now. It would cost a left nut to fill it up with deisel nearing 5 bucks.

That's a sweet looking freightshaker.. How much Hp/torque you putting out with that big cam? Whats the truck primarily used for?

I guess I need to start a project page for the freight. Haha.... It's relatively stock. Just has a little pump work and straight pipe. Stock is 290 horse and 950 ft lbs. It was my daily whip for about 6 months. The last half of 2010. Its pretty cool to drive around. Not one person cut me off or tailgated.
