300D Turbo trans mods. - Blackstack - 02-17-2011

What does it take to get a stock auto trans. to hold up behind a modified OM617? I'm one of those guys that would just as soon have an auto vs. a manual gear box. I'm starting in on my project and am just planning for the future here. Can they be made to take 300-350 HP? What can you do as far as making it into a manual shift valve body?

There are several different transmissions put behind the 617. There is a part # with a 722.xxx number that will tell you your version.
I have the 722.120 supposedly the weakest trans. I didn't have a problem with it slipping but I think had the pressure turned up to high and I physically cracked the case. The trans still actually worked but it leaked fluid like crazy.

I think I turned the modulator in to much 4+ turns iirc.

You can increase the pressure in the trans by turning in the modulator (clockwise) a few clicks at a time. I would go max of 2 turns now that I split mine lol.

FYI 300-350 isn't easy or cheap with a om617.
Were talking big turbo, big pump 8mm+, ~40psi boost.

The first thing you need to do is get it up to spec, which means getting a gauge, adjusting the modulator pressure correctly and making sure the governor pressure is correct. The transmission will not hold more than ~225hp without the clutches and brake bands slipping. Adjusting the modulator pressure too high will just make shifting hard.

There isn't anything, currently, to make the valve body a full manual. As stock it works as a semi-manual with L limiting to 2nd, and S to 3rd. The closest thing is a shift correction kit that will set the firmness for each shift.

So nobody makes a shift kit for the old beasts? I'll have to rip into the trans I have and see...

Yup, and head/cam work, fabricated intake/exhaust manifold, intercooler, water/meth injection etc. etc. I'm just planning 1-2 years out.

I'm getting ready to send my slush box out for some new internals and a converter, is there a better converter out there and if there is does it have a higher or lower stall? I can get anything made if I need to put a couple of different converters together but maybe there is somthing out there.

Thanks man, I found the thread after posting. I will try a place I found in Anaheim and see if they can build a hybrid, I think 1,800 to 1,900 would get me off the line.
