RE: Lurker finally registered... - Captain America - 01-13-2011

Haha I knew the H1 beadlocks when I saw em. They look awesome on the Bronco. My buddy has a '92 H1 that he took the 6.2 Diesel out of. He was gonna put a 7.3 powerstroke in it but there's was too much work involved so he settled on a twin turbo big block chev ...

RE: Lurker finally registered... - dieselboy - 01-13-2011

I've seen that video!!! At first I was like thats a funny sounding 6.5 then I was like ooooooooo.

RE: Lurker finally registered... - Captain America - 01-13-2011

Hell Yeah! Well now you know the Author haha. That 6.5 was a gutless wonder...

RE: Lurker finally registered... - dieselboy - 01-15-2011

Does anyone know what my rims are called? They are 16x8 et11 they came off a 190e 16v cosworth.

Centras. Can't stand chrome myself. We ran them (painted black) in the second lemons race. IIRC they were pretty heavy. Think I still have the centercaps laying around.

Hmm I looked up the centra rims and I cannot find my style. I need to look and see what they are stamped again

awesome car, but it really needs to be lowered much!

RE: Jesse's hx35 powered w116 - ForcedInduction - 01-17-2011

FYI, that is an HY35, not an HX35.

(01-17-2011, 11:09 AM)ForcedInduction FYI, that is an HY35, not an HX35.

Crap my Bad. I even knew that but for some reason hx got stuck in my head. It even has the 9cm housing and had the attached Wg. Oops.

RE: Jesse's hy35 powered w116 - led-panzer - 01-17-2011

Yea I thought that turbine housing looked a little smaller than an hx. Looks great man, I love the sound too I watched that video like ten times. Do you think the long piping to and from the intercooler helps get rid of the surge?

RE: Jesse's hy35 powered w116 - dieselboy - 01-17-2011

It doesnt even try to surge while driving hard on the street.

It has the exhaust on it now too it sounds sweet.

RE: Jesse's hy35 powered w116 - muuris - 01-18-2011

Don't take Forced's opinions too hard. You use a wrench and a welding machine, he prefers the calculator. Things are always more or less different in real life than in theory.

Better still to install a backpressure gauge before starting to play with fueling. That turbine side is small..

Nice job, although the intercooler installation isn't the prettiest one Wink

RE: Jesse's hy35 powered w116 - dude99 - 01-18-2011

Just a thought if this is going to be a daily driver you might want to install some sort of heat shield between the engine and the heater servo to prolong it's life. I can't remember if the w116 came with one stock or not. Other than that it looks like one hell of a car....

I thought about this the other day actually. I may put a shield around it when I change the circulation pump.
That and moving the battery so I can change my intercooler piping and put a 90° on the passenger side donut doesnt look lopsided.

RE: Jesse's hy35 powered w116 - dieselboy - 01-22-2011

Took it to the 1/8th mile drags tonight. I'll have a burnout video soon

10.5@71mph. Not bad on the stock pump and launching at ~5 psi of boost. Any time I'd get over 5psi at the tree I'd start sliding the front tires lol.

New 215/55/16 in the front and worn 245/55/16 in the rear

Hasn't peg-legged on me yet.

RE: Jesse's hy35 powered w116 - majesty78 - 01-22-2011

I am with you, that there is clearly no surge on your setup.

Surge typically apperas when requesting to much boost/airmass at to low rev range which is prevented in your setup by using a turbo which doesnt spool fast enough to produce surge.

For a example what surge is, here a video of my Seat Ibiza TDI, it has 1.9l displacement and was equipped with a vnt charger from a 3.0l V6 engine. It spooled so good, that we could make it surge via programming (requested boost) at low rpm any time. The white gauge is EMP, the upper is oil tmp, and in the middle of those two is the boost gauge. You can clearly see the flutter and hear the typical "chachachachacha" noise while its surging.
We certainly didnt leave it that way, this was just for testing to find out the surge line....

Nothing like that to be seen on your videos, so no need to worry IMHO.

Regards, Alex

RE: Jesse's hy35 powered w116 - 300D50 - 01-23-2011

Like the new cooler look, better match for sure!
But it needs a skid plate Wink

RE: Jesse's hy35 powered w116 - dieselboy - 01-23-2011

I actually had my first oilpan casualty the other day. I forgot about a dip onthe other side of a intersection and slammed it into the ground hard. Hard enough to break both motor mounts and torque struts. The pan still holds oil but I'll need to change it soon.
I did new motor mounts today and it made a world of difference it's almost silent now.

I'd love a skidplate. I'll see if I can fab one up some time. I was also thinking about shortening the oil pan so it's just a little above the cross member for when I lower the car. I'm going to do 3 coils in the front and 1.5/2 in the back and see how it looks.

I hope to have the video soon of my car doing the big burnout at the track on friday night.
245/55 is alot of tire to get spinning lol. It held 2nd at 4500rpm.
Oh and my heater controls quit working last week. No blower no circulation pump etc.... The pump is good I tested it.

Also any ideas what would cause my tach to freak out? It works randomly and I found it's electrical related because I can flick the high beams and it will make the tach start working for awhile the it will quit. Even the turn signal or brake lights will make the tach kick on sometimes. There are also times where the car is idling and the tach is jumping all over the place.

1 more thing..... Still haven't found another set of my rims. Still don't know what they are called. They use the same center caps as centras it seems.

RE: Jesse's hy35 powered w116 - 300D50 - 01-23-2011

Sounds like a bad ground or a flaky tach amp, but that's just a guess.

As for the pan casualty... that sucks. did it crack the cast pan, or just dent the heck out of the stamped section?

RE: Jesse's hy35 powered w116 - dieselboy - 01-23-2011

Dented the crap out of the stamped pan. I was relieved when that's all it was. It also just lightly touched the bottom of the intercooler. The welded on bungs for the mounts on the bottom got 1/8" shaved off. I even knew the intersection well too. Total cerebral flatulence.

I was thinking ground too but wouldn't that effect other gauges? My low fuel light randomly turns on, water temp is correct and has never flinched, clock keeps time, odo works now after I cleaned and lubed it, oil pressure is mechanical and un hooked, speedo works too.

Where does the tach amp get power from? I haven't even looked into it that much I've been busy doing other stuff lol.

What size fuel tank does the w116 Sd have? I put 20.3 gallons in it tonight.

RE: Jesse's hy35 powered w116 - 300D50 - 01-23-2011

the tach amp sits in the little "garbage can" like connector on one of the wheel wells from what I can tell, and if it starts going, tach gets crazy.
Having never owned a full complete Benz, that's all I can really add.

RE: Jesse's hy35 powered w116 - dieselboy - 01-27-2011

Washed it today. Still looking for said information^ on rims etc...

(01-22-2011, 02:23 AM)dieselboy 10.5@71mph

Pretty amazing time when you consider how crazy heavy/big W116s are. Probably close to 5,000 lbs with a driver? You've easily doubled the stock horsepower.

//edit: My 190D is only running 76mph in the 1/4... lol

RE: Jesse's hy35 powered w116 - dieselboy - 01-27-2011

It's not that heavy. I'd guess under 4k. Not much under 4.
These have alumn hood and trunk too btw.

RE: Jesse's hy35 powered w116 - 300D50 - 01-27-2011

Oof, that's one heavy car!
The V6 Mighty Max 4x4 stick weighs 3175#, so even allotting for engine weight differences, there's at least 700# difference between the 2 vehicles.

RE: Jesse's hy35 powered w116 - dieselboy - 01-29-2011

I may have gone a little too low.

It looks cool but it's too low. Bilstiens have about 2" up travel left.
I'll get another set of springs an try again.

I saw that someone cut 2 coils off and it looked like it was just lightly lowered but I got greedy and cut 3. I have about 4" to the ground on the intercooler.

RE: Jesse's hy35 powered w116 - garage - 01-29-2011

Man that LOOKS sweet though, scary with that intercooler so low.
Id say you should go for 2 1/2 coils!!

RE: Jesse's hy35 powered w116 - 300D50 - 01-29-2011

4" is the planned total clearance for my tube frame car idea in "non-inspection" mode... :p

I'd say raise the cooler, and keep it, it looks bitchin!

The suspension geometry will eat your tires alive.

If the speed bump doesnt take out the intercooler first. But god it looks so gangsta! His wheels look pretty straight, not at all like the rear camber I have in my w123.

I see you havent rolled your fenders yet?

RE: Jesse's hy35 powered w116 - dieselboy - 01-29-2011

I rolled the fronts for now. I haven't touched the back yet. I'm going to try a 2" spacer under the coil plate first and see how that goes.

RE: Jesse's hy35 powered w116 - winmutt - 01-31-2011

2" spacers? What are the specs on the shocks? What a wierd combo. Why not just use HD shocks?

RE: Jesse's hy35 powered w116 - jonbobshinigin - 01-31-2011

Much better with the 2" spacers for sure! I am liking the look. I wonder thought how long a car with 400k on it will last with so much power...could be a real testament to the already known durability of these cars and engines!

RE: Jesse's hy35 powered w116 - dieselboy - 01-31-2011

Well the shocks are what I had. And they work awesome it's way smoother and rides perfect IMO.

As for the 400k I have receipts from a new engine at 266k and a new trans at 310k

RE: Jesse's hy35 powered w116 - winmutt - 02-06-2011

Flare much? Have no clue what kind of time that was.

RE: Jesse's hy35 powered w116 - JTY - 02-06-2011

Nice s-class mercedes Cool
Your transmission is slipping like hell, do something before it melts and goes to heaven Angel

RE: Jesse's hy35 powered w116 - dieselboy - 02-06-2011

Huh? Transmission doesn't slip at all. It chirps 2nd and shifts hard into 3rd and 4th.
It was burning out in 1st. If it was slipping the speedo wouldn't of stayed at 30mph. You can see the speedo jump when it grabs 2nd. I didn't realize the video was sideways and you cant really hear the turbo either. If I watch it on the phone you can hear the turbo screaming.
Oh and I just got a non egr manifold, 12" brakes off a 90 126 420sel, good back seat at the jy. 119$ lol. Oh and a spare head and intake manifold.

RE: Jesse's hy35 powered w116 - winmutt - 02-06-2011

Thats a 14 second 0-60?

RE: Jesse's hy35 powered w116 - dieselboy - 02-06-2011

I was brake boosting in the beginning an it started to brakestand. When the speedo jumps to 30mph is when I let off the brakes.

RE: Jesse's hy35 powered w116 - willbhere4u - 02-06-2011

You need some euro headlights! I have a speedometer for that car that goes to 160mph

RE: Jesse's hy35 powered w116 - dieselboy - 02-06-2011

I saw a 160 speedo today for it but I didn't snag it.
There were so many things I wanted to grab on the 50% off day. But big brakes were #1 priority and I got them. And I got that other stuff too.

Btw it has to less than a 14 0-60 because I did the 1/8th in 10.5 @ 71mph.

RE: Jesse's hy35 powered w116 - ForcedInduction - 02-07-2011

Yeah its less than 14 seconds, 13 seconds.
A 10.5second 1/8th can't be right. I have done 11.01seonds in the 1/8th with a non-powerbraked 0-60 of 10 seconds.

I see. Totally looks like a bad flare. Now it makes sense !

RE: Jesse's hy35 powered w116 - dieselboy - 02-07-2011

Installed the gen II w126 big brakes today. Initial braking felt the same till I got on them harder and they are definitely better performing.
My w116 already had vented front rotors but they are slightly smaller. I will be putting my old brakes on a friends w123 wagon as he wants to keep his 14's

I changed backing plate and all. The 126 brakes have a air scoop too.

LMK what your plan for a spare is. I have been riding around for years on a prayer.

RE: Jesse's hy35 powered w116 - dieselboy - 02-07-2011

I'll keep my 14" in the trunk. It will work in the rear.
