I thought it would be prudent to start a thread detailing the aftermarket CR ecu's that are out there...

I'm aware of the following:

Nira EDC-CR
Specialist components/simtek 'Hurricane' (pre-mapped turn key kits for the ford duratorque and ford lion - also the merc v6 3.2 cdi coming soon apparently)
Adaptronic 1280 (appears to work according to youtube)
ECU6D from diesel2fast4u on this forum

And of course, Bosch motorsport Smile

I have been doing some homework on aftermarket diesel ECU systems.

As I work for a company that exports truck and industrial engines we needed a solution for testing these engines so that’s why I spend some time investigating on aftermarket diesel ECU systems.

I selected on the following criteria.

Timing signals or trigger modes and start with no cam sync. Only BOSCH and Adaptronic have this option to run with no cam sensor.
Injector driver output protection. BOSCH Nira and Adaptronic have short-circuit protection on there injector drivers.
Able to run HPI fuel system. Only Adaptronic have this.
Able to run Delphi mart injector system. Only Adaptronic have this.
Able to control VNT turbo servo activators. BOSCH Specialist components Skynam or Sybele and Adaptronic have this option
Lamda sensor input. BOSCH Nira Skynam or Sybele and Adaptronic have this option

BOSCH motorsport ECU. Expensive and a lot of options and not a very positive feedback on information questions.

Nira I7r.
Can run solenoid and piezo up to 8 injectors.
I find the software complicated as it calculates back to a AFR or lambda number.

Specialist components build the hardware and Bodyligic makes complete wire looms for some engine models including the OM642.

I find the software easy to use and it’s very basic in controls functions but it works.

Can run up to 8 solenoid injectors.
This ECU also has a lot of options and uses the standard GEMS software. I find that there are to many menu’s to work in to set-up the ECU.

According to there specification list they have a lot of options but the software seems complicated to me. It can run 2 boostonctrollers had EGR and many other things.

Adaptronic 1280DI ECU.
This is the system I know best as we are using it to test diesel engines almost every day as we use there engine test unit and it has proven to be very robust as we had short-circuits in wiring and faulty injectors on numerous occasions.
It can run solenoid and piezo up to12 injectors with two pilot and main and post injections.
This ECU can run about everything and the software is easy to use as it’s using a VE based calculation. The ECU has open base software so if you know about PLC programming you can do it all. If you want to boost control 4 turbochargers or commonrail fuelpumps it can be done. Also the onboard oscilloscope and simulator makes it a lost easier to troubleshoot things.
This system has been tested on the limit on motorsport as they run Le Dakar rally and use it to run a V8 Scania truck close to 2000Hp and use ALS to spoolup to massive turbochargers.
Price start from 2016Euro ex VAT for a ECU kit.

I’m planning to transplant a OM628 as I love V8 engines and I’m going to use the 1280DI ECU for it as they already have this engine in the test program or a Specialist components Hurricane ECU system.
Also they told me that Adaptronic will have the configuration for the Mercedes 216/316/416 CDI ready in the next weeks so I also Keep this option open.

If you like to know some more here’s an e-mail address you can ask for more information as they are specialized in diesel ECU systems and they work with most of these manufactures except for bosch and NIRA. They are also able to build custom injectors and fuelpumps. dieselecusystems@gmail.com

I see the Adaptronic Diesel common rail ECU is now advertised at 1549 euros.....I think its only a matter of time before we see an OM617 with a working Common Rail system and a fully controlled VGT...Provided someone can machine the head to accept a suitable injector.

That's the easy part. The prechambers can be easily duplicated with the injector mounting threads changed to match a CR injector's seat/ mounting config.

Interesting to see Adaptronic mentioned, they are Australian based in Sydney, a friend of mine is a friend of the Adaptronic guys, he got hold of some of their gear half price, none of their ECUs are diesel specific, actually their website never used to even mention that the 1280 could be used on diesels but yeah, my friend said he had heard about it being used on Diesels, if I ever had a common rail diesel I wanted to mod I'd probably go for Adaptronic.

I think that maybe that is just the Dutch office of the the company or a licencee, there's been the Sydney based Adaptronic since 2003, same logos & all.

I Will second it as i built the cases for the first run of ecu's that Andy produced some years ago
They are some what different to what he builds now but
Rv do build the injector drivers to run with the adaptronic computer

and adaptronic needs the injector drive that ruud designed. the only problem is that you would need a flow table for eatch injector to have it running properly. they cant make the injectors identical so you need to give eatch one a specific offset. 90% of the oem commonrail ecus on the market are given a pre destined offset and afther that it will test to see if the injector is breaking in properly and when its worn out.
aftermarket ecu's cant do this.

and adaptronic needs the injector drive that ruud designed. the only problem is that you would need a flow table for eatch injector to have it running properly. they cant make the injectors identical so you need to give eatch one a specific offset. 90% of the oem commonrail ecus on the market are given a pre destined offset and afther that it will test to see if the injector is breaking in properly and when its worn out.
aftermarket ecu's cant do this.

I hear some chatter about "developer mode" in conjunction with an sds in the forums, is that a realistic option? Will it really do "anything you want" or is that a bit too optimistic? If that's really true, you could buy the drivetrain from a donor vehicle with all control units, looms, and hardware to make the swap happen then code out das, esp, or any other non-relevant functions.

Thinking this through a bit more, one could swap engine and trans from a donor, code out non-relevant electronics from both engine & trans ecu, keep CAN communication so the drivetrain will work like factory, then just have to worry about some basic wiring and the mechanics of the swap.

Am I anywhere close to living in reality by thinking it through this way?

Some things can be coded out. Not DAS. For some ECUs, like the OM606A, there are means of faking out DAS. These things become progressively more difficult with later years.

Really all i does is allow you to configure things that were optional for that car or other cars but it is all in German and Mercedes engineering abreviations that do not really translate to anything half the time. And there are layers and passwords etc. It works for things like I want xenon lights or no airmatic if your car had that option.

Well go for 629, easier to tune since it has vastly documented EDC16 management.

Your entry point for common rail in the aftermarket is around 5k for undocumented crap. It really is closer to 10k-15k to have a working engine to use.
