Lets talk HE351VE upgrades.
Lets talk HE351VE upgrades.
There is a few people on here who are working with the HE351VE. I am one of them. I just dynoed my car and made a disappointing 360hp. The most boost I can get out of this turbo is 32# no matter where I have the VGT plotted. I run it tighter i get higher EGP I run the VGT more open I get lower EGP but just cant get any more boost. I think most of us can agree that there just isnt enough "leverage" on the turbine shaft to turn the compressor. I wanna take my turbo off and get it upgraded.
1) Who knows what the specs are of the stock turbine? I know the compressor side is identical to an HX40 because I swapped in my billet wheel from my HX40/35 hybrid.
2) How does the turbine compare to an HX40 turbine? I know people are getting way more boost then 32 on an HX40 so I am guessing the wheel has something to do with it.
3) Does all the VGT stuff like the vanes in the flow of the exhaust just make these turbos shittier in the long run? I do like how I can brake boost my car and get decent boost.
4) Would it be worth it to upgrade the compressor when I do the turbine upgrade?
So here are some people I see that do upgrades....
http://turbolabofamerica.com/category/ho...o-upgrade/
I also noticed this but it says this is stock size for HE351VE but I dont think it is....
http://baeturbosystems.com/compressorwhe...4-1-2.aspx
I also wonder how the 6.7 guys have no problem getting 40+ of boost. Guess its just a different animal for us.
Stock he351ve specs
Compressor 60mm Ind 86mm exd 7 blade
Turbine 60mm exd 70mm Ind 12 blade
Hx40 super turbine 67mm exd 76mm Ind 10 blade
The max turbine inducer size for he351ve is 70mm
And also the tip height is different to hx35/40 turbine wheels
Inconel is also hard and costly to machine, so you have two turbine wheel choices both are 10 blade.
Turbo lab of america for a 67mm and bae for a 64mm
Bae are a pain to deal with and slow. Turbo lab sent me out the turbine wheel very quick.
The compressor wheel has plenty of flow left in it especially your billet your half way there. A he431ve uses the same compressor wheel but a vgt 67/76mm turbine wheel.
You can also go up to 67mm on compressor side.
But in your case I'd go with a turbine wheel until you Max the comp wheels flow. Then go looking to upgrade.
I took turbo off last night so I am going to send it out. I'm just worried about the turbine being a 10 blade. That seems to be going in the other direction but hopefully just the fact that it's a bigger wheel makes a difference.
I just reread your post...so you are saying a he341ve is a bigger turbo then a he351ve?
......EDIT. Just reread again...didn't know there was a he431ve...
Well I am going to give it a shot then. If this doesnt work for more power I am scrapping this turbo all together!
hy fine people....
Have a question regarding holsets..... recently bought a HX35W with a 12 marked on the exaust housing, rumors sorround this number state is is related to turbine área... could someone explain or direct me to detailed info .
that would be much apreciated
About the thing being the 351V , have u consider that being that turbo made to flow in a 6000cc engine , will just be to big for a 3000 engine irespective of fuel injected?
once i had a friend with a 606 and a kkk27 and it was just too big , we changed to a HX35 and light was made.
regards
351ve being variable makes it spool actually well for its size.
I've set the veins at different point to see the difference and its hugely noticeable.
As the car builds boost the veins open to keep egp down,
A larger turbo being fixed hasn't got this feature.
I sure hope the 10blade wheels sorts out the limited boost available.

Well turbo is off to TurboLabsofAmerica. Can't decide if I want to upgrade the cold side too? I wanna make more power but just don't wanna be in same boat of not having enough exhaust wheel to turn the compressor.
hello holsets enthusiasts...
i´m so sorry to say but now i can atest "HOLSET CRAP"
well installed a HX35W marked 12, in my heavily modded 605, and disapoited, very dissapointed. i can´t imagine it in a stock engine....
i had done a 606 with one alike , and it does worth the assle, takes time to spool but in the end does the job, the owner wants to be in the 1.5 bar , so couldn´t watch the behaviour above that.
i can´t say is that bad, maybe for a dragster type does the job , but for a DD or street racer , it does not come to life soon enough.
But for a 605 is too big , maybe the smaller turbine housing , opinions are apreciated.
thanks

Bigger housing spools slower, but restricts the exhaust less so you can make more power, just like when you open vanes on a VNT.
One interesting note many industrial, agricultural or truck engines back in 80s didn't have a wastegate. Instead the exhaust housing was sized so that it reaches full boost at max power rpm and full load.

I have a hx35 with hx40 compressor wheel and machining a garrett ar63 exaust housing for turbine hx35....

I believe the hx35 also has a 9cm housing, which would spool faster than the 12cm housing. It is not so common though. Alcaid can get them new.
atypicalguy , yes i heard around that they have several diff sizes ... unfortunatly us is too far concerning taxes, i belive a friend wich rebuild turbos will send me a modified housing for trials, it looks like there is a garret housing that can be used for the holset 35 core.
pedro ferreira , i believe is not a question of HP the gt23 can make , it is about how u want your engine to pull, installing a VNT is not a easy task, i have destroyed 2 of them just in trials. and a 605 is a lot diff than a 606, for instance i made a pump for a fella wich later installed a HX35W 12 cm in his 606 and it just rocks, has a bit of lag but nothing special , just reduce gear kick it and is like a Honda .
but for the 605 , this turbine housing is too big. Garret 28 R i belive is the turbo for the 605, and there is diff compressor too , for me is too expensive at the moment.
How do you guys have any lag on an hx35. I had hx35 with 40 compressor and that thing was lit so quick!

I had a 16cm non devided housing and had good boost by 3k and by 4k had 30 plus. Made 36 psi but by red line EGP was getting in the 40's

Ah okay, I forgot you had a billet cold side already. I think upgrading the exhaust side will help you out, I am very interested to see the outcome
Yes me too! If this doesnt work i think there is no hope for these turbos. I also installed my regrinded cams at the same time so i am going to try to adjust them too to see what happens.....maybe i should wait until I change the wheel though. I gotta quit changing 2 things at once.
I am very bad about doing that as well, I can't help but tear into somethings else while it's already apart. Just food for thought, I'm not sure how crower ground yours, but I had them grind a cam for my pulling tractor, and at that time I knew little to nothing about cams, but since have come to learn quite a lot, at my own expense.
The guy at crower acted as if he could fix me up with a cam that would be the bees knees, and it ended up he ground me a cam not even close to what I needed, I found this out after some funny dyno runs and talking to a guy at No Limit mfg. he ground my cam as if it was a gas engine, not a diesel.
Anyhow, I just saw who ground yours and thought I would throw that forewarning out there. But you don't seem to be having the same issues as I did, and the MB engines are closer to gas burners anyhow. So maybe yours is fine!
Yeah i think they just made them slightly bigger overall. So it made duration bigger and changed intake valve closing point and so it closes as the piston too far up. I would rathet make it closer to bottom like how it was and so advancing it would help with that.
Just adjust it to make my cranking compression slightly higher.
I just want to let everyone know at this point I would highly suggest NOT using Turbo Labs of America. They have had my turbo for 3 weeks. At first they acted like they do this mod all the time then now that they got the turbo it seems like they have never done it ever before. In the last week I have gotten no response from them at all. I had pretty much assumed my turbo is just stolen. Finally after calling and texting the 2 people who work there someone responded and said the turbine was machined. So hopefully soon I will get it back but at this point I am not really sure what is going on. I will report back on performance when and if I get it back.
thats not good, they where very quick with the delivery of my turbine wheel, ive been flat non stop so havent even dropped my exhaust housing to the machine shop yet.
The last one i heard they did on the cummins forum was an exchange turbo for a customer with the wheels etc fitted.
Hopefully the wait is worth it and you get good results.

This turbo comes from a 2008 and up Cummins like in a Dodge 3500. I like to think its a pretty modern turbo.
