225/50R16 on a w123
225/50R16 on a w123
Has anyone tried a tire this wide on a w123?
Will it clear okay?
Putting 16's on my w123 and wanting a little wider tire, but don't know how wide I can go.
I think mine are 225/55 R16 but I could be mistaken, I'll check later and try to get a picture from the front or back to give you an idea
Okay cool, I was just going to go with the 225/50 because it keeps it kind of closer to the original tire height to keep my speedo correct.
My bad, mine are 205/55r16, outside tire diameter is the same as stock and my speedo reads within a couple mph of what the gps on my phone says. So the size you're talking about would be wider, not sure how wide your wheels are. I don't understand tire sizes, why they can't just put wheel diameter, sidewall height, and width, I don't know.
They do 205 = total width, 55 = height of sidewall in percentage of width, R = radial tyre, 16 = wheel diameter. And then the index number for the load rating, p.e. 95 (=690kg), H = 210km/h / 130MPH. Truck tyres are often given the cross-section in inches. P.e. 37X12.5 (37" dia, 12.5" height). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tire_code#Examples
Tyre code reading is the motorist's algebra
205/55 R16
215/55 R16
225/50 R16
^these are the possible 16" tyre sizes for W123s. Depending on the wheel's width. A 225 on a 7" wheel might be a bit hard pressed, a 205 on a 8" wheel is bit stretched and the wheel touches the curb before the tyre
These are 205/55s on a 8" rim:
^they had to be shot on the wheel with a tyre bomb!
205/55 seem to be pretty cheap & available, I'd go with them. 215/55 & 225/50s are expensive, as far as I observed.
.
I have 7" rims
But I am not much of a fan of the "stretched" look, I like the tire to protect my rim, but just not as much as the stock 14" tires
Pretty sure I am going to go with a 225/50R16 in General G-max tires.
Not too bad on price, and they are suppose to wear very well, plus they look cool
They're gonna stick way out on the sides methinks
I have googled it, and it doesn't really buldge at all surprisingly, Ill order them this week hopefully and report back!
On the front it'll be too wide...

Lowered, yes. Here's more: http://www.mercedes-fans.de/autoderwoche...80/start=0
215/55R16s are in the tire shop, I just have to get them mounted up and make sure they fit!
Pics soon to come
Well I found out driving on a rough road today, that when the suspension compresses the tire will catch the fender lip. Luckily it only ripped a little rubber off the tire and didn't ruin my brand new tires.
Guess I will soon be learning how to roll a fender!

Those fender lips are made of 10 gauge cold rolled tungsten from what I can tell. Have fun!

Sorry Daniel, haven't got picture of my crappy fender rolling job yet :p
Pomidori, they are Voxx rims. No longer in production according to their website. I bought them off a fellow member on the forum a couple years ago and just got them put on.
