It's cold outside
larsalan I guess I need to look at this stupid ass drip shit. What you have to like mess with those elements on the pump? What a fucking hassle. then use some wire to hold the throttle open or some shit?
Valves, glows, and battery for starter revs

Lol. I'll get to your level.
Slim, it got to -50c in some parts of our state a week ago. But that was including windchill
But it is colder than a witches tit across the pond!
Well a testament to the basics. Checked the glow plugs on 85. 3 of 5 bad go figure. I got the 75 going with some finess of the pedal.
Glow plugs on order. Duh.
Bigger turbo, Dieselmeken pump, w115 Mani, 4speed, boost pyrometer. And I don't check glow plugs. By the way....I'm a dumbass.
A grinder, some flat stock, a welder, and a little Por 15 on that rust hole should be good enough
(01-23-2014, 03:03 PM)larsalan I'm the latest victim of the freeze. I believe my starter motor is frozen solid. Need to find me a blow torch.

How's your car doing otherwise? I did the valves and updated all my glow plugs and I'm doing good again. -3 when I started this morning.
Not sure the exact causes of the problem.
Starter was really slow cranking. Then not cranking at all. Tried to jump batteries of a pickup truck. Acting kinda funny.
Started a small campfire under the starter/downpipe area to warm it up. Turned the key and got about 1/4 second crank from the starter then it quit.
Tried the hammer thing, didn't help at all.
I'll hook it up to the prius when the old lady comes back and see if that helps.
voltage was like 13v. I had 2 group49 batteries connected. weird stuff. I turned the motor by hand and it went fine. I think that starter is flakey.
Yesterday I heated one battery up in a hot bathtub, that didn't work either.
Prius should be here within the hour and we'll see if that does it.
She maybe leaving me alone here for the weekend so I hope I can at least drive to the store.
x2 warm battery. i bought a jumper unit for reassurance when i leave the home. 1500 peak amp. That thing is a beast. Warm battery, block warmer overnight, plus that jumper box and i got enough amps to blow a motor up.
I found if my car didn't start once it liked to stay not starting, sort of a failure leads to failure scenario. That jumper unit tells the car to stop being a b!tch and start up.
exactly, if you don't keep it going and she turns cold she stays cold. The prius ought to do it. That thing could jump start a locomotive.
Maybe it's a neutral saftey switch acting up. The switch in this car is bypassed in some way that it can crank no matter what gear is selected.
I was getting some weak cranking on full batteries and a full prius attached.
Then, started back to no cranking, just a solenoid click.
I really think the starter motor needs heated up.
I also am trying to think up another way to crank the motor up to speed.
Get an air ratchet onto the power steering pully. Not high hopes for that plan though.
Just watched the weather. 9 degrees in Texas lol. Lars we are gonna get beat up in the next 4 days. -40 type stuff again

Probably is not the saftey switch. I had jumped 12v+ to the starter terminal and nothing. That starter must be fucked up. I have a spare that didn't want to turn with 12v+ on the post and 12v- on the mounting bracket. Kind of a no go on replacing it.

Yeah my car has trouble starting when it's colder than like 70 outside, time for valves and glowplugs
I feel like I took over this whole thread .
I just got a 'new' negative post clamp and checked that ground strap for good conductivity. Sanded down all the connections by the battery.
Try to crank a bit. The starter will engage but as soon as a piston starts to compress there's not enough power to keep turning.
Maybe a combo of 5 and 6 yr old batteries, a worn starter motor and sub zero temps.
So you don't feel too bad about taking over the thread...
It was 1f or -17c this morning. I might be getting used to that, it didn't seem that bad.
Today's problem wasn't starting. It was trying to move. The ice and snow melted enough to get the brakes wet on the front of the car. This morning, they were frozen. Didn't take much to break them free but, that was a new one for me.

I brought the 2 batteries inside and put them in the bathtub to warm up. Popped the lids and lots of water had evaporated. Particularly from one cell where I have accidentally poked a hole in the cover with a screwdriver.
Topped off the fluid and put them both on a tender indoors.
The saga continues.
Don't worry, my car wouldn't start today either. About 5*f and a -15 windchill.
I plugged it in, and I'll retry tomorrow. It would've started if it was plugged in, so if it doesn't start now, I'll know something else is the problem
Figured out my problem. After spending $115 on a battery. I had to remove the starter. I wouldn't wish that chore on my worst enemy. Opened that motor up and cleaned out 30yrs of corrosion and gunk.
Back on the block, wired up. Fired right up.

This reminds me of the first time a changed a starter!
My '81 300TD starter went bad during a particularly cold winter in upstate NY.
The ambient temp outside was -22F (without windchill) and my bright idea of using a redi heater to stay warmish only caused the snow on the car to melt, puddle, then freeze my back to the ground. I needed help out.
My tdi says its 6F but it feels colder!
Good job larsalan! Your cars been waiting 30yrs to take that shit! When its gotta go......plop!

I fell over about 15-20 times on a bunch of ice that was formed around the perimeter of the car. Walking around trying to find misplaced tools. Taking breaks every 45min to thaw my hands indoors. Now my hand, forearms, and face are dyed black.
"A labor of love. I wish my starter would crap out so I would have the excuse to lay on ice and cover myself in thick black oil. A benefit to working cold is when the wrench slips and you bust a knuckle, hands to numb to feel it. There's also the gratifying feeling when you walk in the house after doing a 2 hour job that got stretched to 6 and look at a lazy friend, family, loved one and knowing you were more productive. While they were wrapped up in blankets, drinking hot cocoa, watching Maury, maybe after a hot relaxing bath you were working! There's value in that."

I was following this method with a 2ft extension and a u-joint to remove the top bolt on that starter. Using one hand to keep the u-joint/socket from twerking out of the bolt then my other hand and neck/head to try and turn the driver. My spine is fucking killing. That bolt was fucking STUCK.

Lol I keep trying to get my wife to learn so she can work on the car for me. No luck there.
I'm still driving, busted my knuckles a few weeks ago doing valves andnglow plugs also the manual glow controller. I was driving at -15 a few days ago. Plugs and everything else about 100$ or so. Hate to think what paying someone would cost.
I may be in need of cleaning out my starter too. If that oil is too cold sometimes it acts weird. Hopefully I can wait for warmth.
Lars congratulations on a win by the way.

I wasn't aware of that method of removal back in the day so I cut about an inch off a 10mm Allen key and put the piece into a 10mm offset ratcheting wrench. It was still a bitch but it worked!

0 degree today, -11 tomorrow. Heat went out in car. Rust holes in floor blowing cold air at me. 40minute drive to school. Hating life. #whininglikebaby

I suggest until you work out the heating issue on a warmer day, that you switch to a 100% bean diet for breakfast, and heat the car with methane. I suggest also nose plugs

It's freezing here today, it's like 60 and there's a good bit of precipitation. Good thing I'm just chillin in the shop at work welding up some new arms for one of the sprayers
You guys are too funny :-p I got to put a list together for all the crap that needs to be dome to my cars. It just keeps getting worse.

No heat in a w123 is how I made it here to CHI like 5wk ago. Cold as anything for 5hr drive wrapped up in blankets. Stop every 1.5hr to try and heat up on coffee. Had to get off the expressway near CHI. My mind was going too slow to be safe(ish) in 70+mph traffic.
Long ago I had put a propane tank top heater shotgun in an old escort I used to drive. Very quick and dirty 'fix'.
Drill weekend :-)
