Diesel 450SL???
Diesel 450SL???
One guy on here did it with a on om606 in to a 280sl His car is RHD so he had more clearance issues with the turbo and steering box but he did a killer job of it. But the 280sl is already an inline 6 not the V8
(06-26-2013, 01:16 AM)SWL300SDL I have the chance to buy a 1974 450SL for dirt cheap. So....... how hard would it be to stuff a OM603 engine in there? Anyone done this?I have seen a couple of OM617 conversions in the 450 SL. They seem to work out well and have no hood clearence problems.

I am currently starting a conversion on my wifes 450 SL using a 2007 Mercedes V-6 Turbo Diesel. I am also considering going to the 98-99 606 engine instead so I could get more H.P. Accually I want to blow the doors off of my idiot neighbors 55 chevy with a 454!!!

I had to make a steel sump to clear the X member. There are rules in the UK about modifying chassis members within 12" of suspension mounting points. The gearbox is a Getrag 717.450 manual from an E320 petrol car complete with flywheel. The starter is on the wrong side of this engine to mate to your gearbox. You are correct in the size of the engine bays. Identical.
Have a read here on a Cali 107 diesel conversion. Probably a better bet for you to pursue since all the development work has been done. As I understand it there are also Cali smog regs you will have to follow which precludes a later engine. I may be wrong on that one.
Mach4 on that thread has been a great help and inspiration to me during the last year or so.
