Will's 1987 300sdl
Will's 1987 300sdl
It looks like it has a cracked # 14 head it's pressurizing the coolant system I checked it this morning and it was still at full pressure this morning!
So far it's not mixing coolant and oil or burning antifreeze yet
so I may have some time to save up for a good cylinder head!
I finally got around to installing the rear euro bumper yesterday!
I've been driving it all week and the delivery valves on the injection pump stopped leaking!
The transmission dose the strangest thing if you accelerate it goes to 2900 rpm and stays there through all of the gears like a cvt transmission very odd
Looks like I was wrong the injection pump delivery valves where wet again! looks like it leaks when it's cold out!
cool I'll hit you up for it when I get the parts!
I got front and back nearly perfect gray leather seats and both front door panels and front carpets for my 300sdl out of a really nice 1990 300se at the you pull and pay fro $180 including a good passenger mirror and headliner front panel! Now I have to wait for a long wheel base w126 to come in to the yards to grab the rear carpet and rear door panels I also really need to find a pair of good gray sun visors! my car had a tan interior witch was a disaster area and completely useless!
I also got and installed a factory leather steering wheel today! F#@* that stupid knee absorber thing under the dash it sucks to remove! and I replaced my broken cruise control switch and also replace my vacuum locking pump!
Now the cruise works but it surges acceleration and deceleration back and forth by like 10mph yikes
And the door locks work! well sort of now they will all unlock just fine! They lock from the trunk ok!
But the drivers door locks the fronts for 5min then they all unlock
But only the front doors and the trunk lock the back doors try but wont go down all the way they must have a leak? also the gas door lock is broken! The line on the pump its self was a little loose so I will start by replacing the rubber connector line!
and score I got a nearly perfect dash with no cracks! It was a lot easier than I thought it only took me about 20min to get it out!
Interesting I'll check that out! I read some where that lubing the linkage should also help! But I think I have a few more problems it only try's to work intermittent now so I think I need to check the amplifier for some bad solder joints?
Here are some pics of the old seats! You can see the new leather steering wheel instead of the old rubber foam one! I'll take some pics of the new seats tomorrow!
yeah, those seats need to go! ive been replacing mine as well, they did not crack as bad as yours, but they have gone from tan to a really hideous shade of purple over the years! also all the springs are broken. Its hard to believe that they once matched the shade of the door panels!
I really like the euro bumpers on this car, the whole thing is coming together nicely!
The new seats are gray! And I am changing the whole interior to gray
so far I have the front door panels and front carpet and all of the seats a new dash and console
The car I got the seats out of was a 300SE not SEL so the back door panel's and carpet would have been to short!
so I have a 2 tone interior until those parts show up at the pick and pull yards! but it looks a million times better!
I got a euro front bumper off a 500sec coupe with fog lights! It looks like it will fit the 300sdl
I also got both rear door panels lite tan that need to be dyed but match the new fronts and 2 nice visors and a full set of long wheel base floor mats also tan!
my interior looks kinda funky gray dark and light tan but it's a lot better than it was some pics tomorrow!
Today I check out the noisy RH front wheel bearing it looked good so I repacked it and put it back together still making noise
But I discovered the idler arm bushing is non existent just gone and there's over an inch of play in the wheel from the left to right
I have a new one on its way!
And big update I have a 6spd manual trans out of an 02 c230 ready to be swapped in as soon as a suitable flywheel can be found!
wow on the 6spd. Good luck with that. Make damn sure you use the larger yoke/flex disks. I am going to have to go back sooner or later and do this...
I replace the idler bushing this week end and it took all of 15min very easy! Big improvement from having none!
Well I decided to bite the bullet and do some much need maintenance. First oil chance since I bought the car so I can get some wheel time in it this summer my last tank got me 26mpg I didn't realize I had already put 2k miles on it on the previous owners oil yikes!
So it got a quick flush with seafoam in the oil and then got 8 fresh quarts of 5w40 Rotela synthetic oil it runs so much quieter now no ticking and it idles much smoother!!!
I also ordered a new valve cover gasket, all of the delivery valve seals and o rings, and both intake manifold gaskets! a new breathe hose and side oil pan gasket!
I noticed both rear manifold inlets covered with nasty black oil I am almost sure that is where it is coming from when under boost!
And a drop in K&N air filter yea I know but hell the stock filter was $36 the k&n is $60 I know more dirt blah blah blah!!!
also replaced my tack and non functional clock with a like new one from a 350sdl form the local pullnpay
For this weekend!
1. new valve cover gasket
2. new intake manifold gasket mine is leaking by the rear two cylinders i have oil blowing out of them at least
3. new Bosch glow plugs
4. new delivery valve o rings/washers
5. new fuel line brackets
6. new fuel line clams/rubber bits
7. a key!
(03-19-2011, 10:01 PM)willbhere4u And a drop in K&N air filter yea I know but hell the stock filter was $36 the k&n is $60 I know more dirt blah blah blah!!!

3...2...1...
I have much bigger problems now!
The valve cover gasket is on now and new glow plugs are in also resealed the delivery valves put some new clips on for the fuel lines temporarily
But the intake manifold is cracked on the last port looks like the previous mechanic in there didn't clean off a piece of old gasket and it broke it! I don't think it can be repaired easily
so now I need to track down a good intake manifold and and possibly new hard fuel lines they are really worn in a few spots
ANY ONE GOT A SPARE INTAKE MANIFOLD???

I have 3 recharge kits that I got for free but they last a long time!
I may have a lead on a manifold I have to go dig through a pile of Mercedes intake manifolds tomorrow
If not Colorado springs u pull and pay has a 1987 300dt so a 2.5hr trip to see if it may still have one is my back up plan!

Which costs as much as a new filter.....

I haven't had any problems with K&N before you just have to keep up on them and make sure they stay oiled! I put over 100k on my old BMW turbo with no problems with one!
Any ways I did find a new intake manifold and got it installed this morning with new manifold gaskets and new line brackets and all is good now it run's like a champ! yea boost!
I need to find a 300e flywheel and a w126 manual pedal set now!
(04-03-2011, 03:42 PM)willbhere4u I put over 100k on my old BMW turbo with no problems with one!Your old bmw turbo doesnt have 400psi compression numbers either. There is PLENTY of threads at peachparts on this. Stock filters always flow more than enough on a benz for stock and even marginal increase. Not sure on the w124 but the w123 flows 2x more than a stock engine uses. This is getting way OT on your car thread but you should really consider what everyone here is saying. If you can hold it up to the sun and see daylight, your are not getting adequate filtration. Of course it sounds cooler.

Its more of the cost I'm not paying $32 for a paper air filter
I would rather just keep re oiling the k&n for free every oil change!
If I lived in a real dusty environment I would put a paper one back in it
Hell I had an MG 1275cc with no filters for 3 years with no issues!
It runs like new again!
all of the fuel line brackets are in place and no more oil leaks on the top side!
but I did notice the turbo has a bit of play and there was some excessive oil in my intake
so I bought this they said it's been rebuilt hope I didn't get screwed but they had good feed back ain't it pretty!
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Mercedes-...4157d0b665
It looks nice! I hope it's rebuilt correctly I'll do the exhaust housing with the vht black paint. Like I did on my dads car it still looks nice after 2 years!
Yea! Craigslist 4 only $300 I got like New 17" x 8.5" wheels with two like new 255/40/r17 Yokohama avid h4s tires! and two baldini specials!
and I was surprised to find out that my car already had 3/4" thick aluminum hub centric spacers for the 16" that where on it and the new wheels fit perfectly with the spacers
Now I need to lower the front about 1.5 inches and replace the rear tires with a bigger size maybe up them from 255/40/17 to 255/50/17
I was looking under neath it and realized one of my tie rod ends is trashed so that's my next project!
Sprinter 2.2 CDI clutch kit and special made single mass fly wheel are on there way from England
I am so freaking happy right now!
I found a used but refurbished w126 manual transmission pedal set with new pedal pads bushings and new slave cylinder
on http://mb-parts24.com/Home for just under $300 shipped from Germany!
now the only real modifications are going to be cross-member drive shaft and shift linkage and speedometer pick up!
I have read the w123 pedal set can be modified to fit a w126 but check out this pic which is borrowed from another forum
w123 Left and w126 Right
Clutch pics its finally here just waiting on some bolts and the pedal set!
MOAR!! This is awesome!
Thanks when I get all of the parts I'll start a detailed transmission swap thread! with lots of pics and measurements!
hehehe, I cant wait to hear how this turns out!
Whats the purpose of the teeth on the back side of the flywheel? Is there a sensor reading there?

Well I finally have all of the main parts for my 6 speed project trans, clutch/flywheel/ pedal set
once I finish my engine swap project on my 240D'S I'll start in on the 300sdl transmission conversion!
Sorry for the slowness of this build I'm almost done with my 240d when it's back on the road the SDL is on target for operation M.T.
This car and thread is awsome Nice work. Cant wait for the 6sp Thread. Hope you document everything so we all can use it!
I'm about to get started! I had to finish up my 240d turbo project car so I have at least one Mercedes running at all times!
I'll be watching closely too, as the fitting of 6 speed 716.631 to OM.603 should be much the same as fitting that same trans to OM.606....
--Loads of C230's here to raid for that trans.....
Where did you end up getting that SM CDi flywheel from...?
