led panzer's 1985 300D
Hello,
This is my first post here, but ive been reading the site now for a couple months, i think ive read almost all the posts . This car was given to me because my 87 year old grandma smshed it into a schoolbus full of kids It was such a beatiful car I coudnt let them scrap it so i rented a u haul and went to get it. So far i have $850 into it and its almost done im just about to start preping for paint. I have pictures to add but i cant figure out how to do it for some reason what am i missing?
Way to go grandma! I'm serious! I mean not for the Benz...
Welcome!

Turns out the pictures are too big. Working on it ( i dont have photoshop)
you have Microsoft office?
the Microsoft picture manager makes it easy to resize pics
I figured it out
Why do I like the look with only headlights and nothing else????
Welcome! Nice job on bringing the car back from that! Did you cut out and weld in a new piece, or were you able to bring the inner fender/headlight frame back?
I have a 300D the same color. I love it personally, I think it looks great on these cars
Are you staying with that color, or respraying the whole car?
Im really looking like a noob here lol. The car was originally from california so its completely rust free, unfortunatly it has all that emmisions crap on it (evil trap ox) it has all the maintence records from 1985 to the present with everything being done at the dealership, including an $8200 bill for a new block, cylinder head, and radiator lol. Still has the stamped tag from the original owner, the seats have had covers on them since the day it was bought, not even a coffee stain. And it has the original med kit in the back, never used.
Looking good great job saving a great car from going to the crusher! I really like the wheels!
I went through almost the exact same stuff on my 300sdl but mine wasn't nearly this involved witch was good for me because I'm a novice compared to what you can do! I usually stick to mechanical fabricating not body work!
Thanks guys. I didn't plan on joining the forum for a little while, at least until I could actually add some performance goodies lol but there was an M pump for sale in the FS WTB section that I couldn't pass up and I had to join to get it. Next up after the paint and the windshield will be to get rid of the trap ox and put a real manifold on it, get a long runner intake manifold, and put a 3 inch turbo back exhaust, and pull the rack limiter. Oh and the gauges. Eventual plans are to put a gt2256v on it but I'm running out of money lol. Currently the odometer reads 275,000
Welcome! Prepare to have a new addiction!!
The trap ox really sucks to have.
Willbe, those wheels are really nice huh! I like them alot, it gives the car a more modern look.
Captian, i stared at the pic with no front body work for like 5mins hahah
Nice job so far.

yeah this is the one that caught my eye
I like the look without the headlight grill thingys
looks like some mad max shit

Awe man! Sorry to hear that. That sucks for sure. Now you need a fan and a radiator. Well it gives you the opportunity to get rid of that crap plastic radiator and get an all aluminum radiator that wont leak and break. Then just put an electric fan on it!
Well a little bit of good news, my friends dad is scrapping his 83 sd and I can have the radiator and fan for free. Wish the windshields were the same.....
check them side by side I don't think that are the same but I could be wrong!
Radiator, fan, and windshield all installed, prepped for paint and ready to shoot Monday. I wanted to have this thing on the road before snow flew but it didn't turn out that way. It's going to be so nice to have a good vehicle this winter, last winter I drove an 89 jeep with no carpet or drain plugs and a top that didn't fit right, I would have to brush the snow off the drivers seat in the morning and snow would land on me at lights. Add that to the fact that it was a stick and a 4 banger with a cracked bell housing and it was a pretty shitty winter. Oh and no 4 wheel drive. To go from that to a Mercedes lol......
a 2wd jeep? broken or stock? I though I was the only lunatic to own a 2wd jeep! 1996 jeep cherokee, stock with 4cly, 2wd, 5 speed. Basically a high station wagon. I know how you feel! Nothing like driving something that can't do what its known for as a brand! Sold it after about a year of use
What other parts from that SD can you scrounge before it goes to the highway in the sky? Is the engine blown or anything? Id take tons of engine compartment stuff, even the whole drivetrain if given enough time to grab it
The jeep was originally a 4x4 but it was broken. The computer took a dump for some reason in late may, a guy offered me 350 bucks for it as is and I took it. As far as the sd its long ogone, he wanted to get rid of it and only got like 200 bucks, it was worth twice that in scrap and way more if he parted it out but I guess he got what he wanted. He ran it on WVO which took its toll, its his third Benz to be killed by rust and veggie oil. After what he did and seeing what it did to my dads powerstroke that shit will never touch my tank. At least I got his valve cover and hood star
Its done
Looks great, congrats on the job well done.
I'm all out of paint or I would lol, two fenders the hood and the door took a whole quart of base and almost a quart of clear. My dad did the painting anyway I've never painted anything before. It figures the first two nights I get to drive it are huge snow storms but I must say I was very impressed, its quite a little tank in the snow. And thanks guys, its nice to hear the opinions of people who actually know what's involved in a project like this, not "So you just took the crushed parts off and put the new ones on?"
Hey so you just took all the smashed shit off and put good parts on from another car that was the same color?
Haha. It looks real good though... can't even tell!
Now its your turn captain, fix the ass end of that red beater lol
Very impressive glad to see one saved from the crusher!
Very nice.
(12-14-2010, 10:18 AM)dropnosky yeah! good as new, great job! Maybe you can repaint the ass end of my car same color!
Looks awesome! No crush for you!

Be my guest sir. I would like her to have some fresh skin but I have no desire to do the required body work... I'd rather pay to have someone do it for me

Yeah I know lol. I forgot to add the "haha" to my response. I know exactly what your saying. Its really just something im not even close to being interested in doing. I can do ANYTHING else, but body and paint is not my thing. I give you mad props on the work you did man it looks fantastic in the pictures.
I think Cap should make a w123 El Camino
^^^^^ Effffin Genius!
Put my gauges in after staring at them every day for two months, surprisingly not that hard although I still have the stock manifolds on so ill have to drill and tap again. Took it out on the highway and was quite surprised - I'm getting about 22lbs of boost! And yes I know before someone hops on me that I don't need that much, I dunno if my wastegate is stuck closed or what but ill have to figure that one out. I still have yet to get rid of the EGR I don't know if that is contributing to the high boost or not. EGTs maxed out at just over 1000.
At least two glow plugs are bad, it shakes and rattles like hell on a cold startup so that's the next project. Already switched it to mobil1 5w-40, damn what an expensive oil change that was
Removed all the EGR crap today.
Made my block off plate
Some improvement, but that could be in my head. Now Im getting this aweful low pitched whistling noise when i get over 5lbs of boost that, in my girlfriends words, sounds like Im dragging a cat. Sounds like its coming from the drivers side firewall. Its always something.
Check that the turbine hasn't been damaged by the cat. Other than that, look for black soot streaks at joints and the manifold flanges.

Ah, you know it might be leaking around the little plate I made for the exhaust hole. Maybe ill double up or try some epoxy. Those manifolds will be replaced in time, I have to make the adaptor plate between the federal manifold and the vnt, clean up the w115 manifold, get a silicone boot, gaskets, and figure out the oil supply.
Sonafabitching alarm is going crazy it won't turn off except with the key in the door which, hey, I can't do while I'm driving so the whole way home the fucking alarm is blaring. I'll pull the relay or unplug it when I have light tomorrow. Damn.
Shined up the w115 manifold and sandblasted the exhaust manifold
The VNT arrived yesterday, a gt2056v from an '05(?) Liberty
Im opting to go with the opposing vacuum and pressure actuators, this seems the easiest form of control even though its not the best.
The stock bracket for the vacuum actuator wasnt big enough for the pressure actuator so i milled it out
I was able to cut the rod on the wastegate and cut the lever that came with it to make them work
Wastegate mounts right up
I made a cardboard template for the vacuum actuator, then measured everything and put it in the Plasmacam program, cut it out and bent it accordingly
Took a little bit of tweaking but everything mounted up right
I was able to get the studs out of the manifold before i left, ill knock out the adaptor between the turbo and manifold tommorow. The only things left are the silicone boot, oil supply lines, and making an exhaust for it.
looking good! That intake manifold looks tits!
Ohhh, you have cool toy!
CNC plasma is amazing for bracketry and other stuff, and you have such a large working area on sheet...
I'm green with envy.
And the turbo actuator and etc looks awesome as well!
Lol I only wish we could afford the equipment you have, I'm green with CNC envy
Well its a good thing I mocked everything up, I was planning on making an adaptor .625 thick but the pressure actuator will hit the intake manifold. Solution - make the adaptor 2.00 thick. It's not ideal but it allows me to use both the actuators and the intake manifold.

The center bearing on the driveshaft went on me, so what little time I had to devote to the turbo project is now being absorbed by fixing it. I was able to make a temporary fix with duct tape (gotta love the hillbilly tech my dad is full of them, like straightening the frame with a big steel bar, tow strap and his excursion). Ordered the part, but as long as I'm going to have the driveshaft out I may as well do the flex disks. Probably this weekend.
