I bought s 300D as a parts car however the engine is in much better shape than I originally thought and the rest of the car is pretty nice to. 186k miles and I got it from the original owner, kind of. I'll spare the details for now but anyways... pretty much everything works. I got to poking around under the hood and I found this... it's not a T3 and it's not a K26. What is it? Anyone know? I did a quick search and didn't find anything.

I checked the vin and didn't see anything "special" other than the composite headlights normally found on Euro cars. Just kind of wondering what I stumbled upon? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance guys! (and gals if you're out there....)

The wastegate design gives it away. MB and VW's T3 turbos are pretty much the only ones to use that style.

Gotcha... Thanks again for solving my mystery. I was hoping it was going to be some super rare car or something haha... Oh well! I'm just glad my parts car turned into something I can just fix and drive...

Yep, factory T3 turbo. I saw an 85 300TD in the junkyard yesterday with that exact symbol. Yours might be a later production replacement, while it was still under warranty (haha, thats a rare statement for these cars!) for example.

Mine has a KKK turbo on it. I was pretty surprised to see it's a two stage. Is that what an '83 300SD with an OM617.951 would have come with or has it been replaced?

It has two sets of alternating vanes on the intake impeller, both different pitches. As opposed to having all identical vanes. I'll post a picture of it sooner or later, it might take some time.

That is not a two stage , it is just a different design of the compressor wheel - It helps with air flow.

Garret is or was working on a type of turbo that had two compressor wheels, back to back. There is a write up in one of my turbo books.

1982 300SD: 304,xxx Super M-pump with 7.5mm elements, 265 Nozzles, GT35 water cooled turbo, M90 Supercharger, A/W Intercooler, Serpentine drive belt, 3" SS exhaust with Magnaflow muffler, 240 breather, AEM dry Filter, Manual Boost Control, EGT / Boost / EMP gauges....Moved on to other projects

1995 F-350 7.3L PSD: 230,xxx 6.0 IC, DIY Stage 1 Injectors, 17* hpop, Tony Wildman Chip, John Wood Trans, 6.4L TC, 3" down pipe, 4" straight exhaust, 310 HP on wheel dyno - 8500# dually: 0-60 in 6.98

Suzuki Samurai: VW 1.9L TD, Trackick doubler transfer case (made by me) 5.8:1 transfer case gears, YJ springs front and rear with rear missing links, wheel base extended 14", diffs welded, some day a VNT.
