new to the site and have alda question - 06cumminspower - 03-17-2009

unfortunately i don't have one of these awesome little diesels but my buddy just got an 83 300sd, i heard the main adjustment for starters is the alda screw for low boost fueling, so earlier today we started playing with it and i could not get any gains from this i even removed the screw completly and could not get any gains or any extra smoke. why is this? i have herd about mabey cleaning the alda or the banjo bolts going into the pump. any suggestions would be a aprreicated along with other cheap or inexpensive mods.

Yes definitely try cleaning out the ALDA line to manifold, the banjos and make sure the switchover valve on the firewall works (if it is not bypassed). That is most likely the source of your issues.

That explains exactly why, you destroyed the ALDA.
The screw is a brazed-in plug in the top of the top aneroid. By breaking the screw you broke the aneroid's pressure seal, it can no longer compensate for boost and it will actually hurt performance by limiting fuel quantity as if there is low boost pressure.

The only two options are to replace the ALDA with a new/used one or remove it entirely (Strongly not suggested until you have a pyrometer, boost gauge and a well tuned engine).

I have a spare ALDA I'll sell on the cheap.

how much do you want for it??
also how do i remove it? there is a you pull it junk yard near by with 5 diesel mercs ( all non turbo though)but i was going to pull the whole alda but couldn't quite figure out how i am completly new to these. i pulled the four bolts and it was still held on and i couldn't see how to unhook it?

You need two 27mm wrenches. One to hold the ALDA and the other to unscrew the nut at the base.

well i removed the alda completly and it definatly has a lil better umpff but still doesn't smoke hardly at all and i have checked all the banjo bolts and they are clear and clean, is it just the carachteristic of a ip with 250k on it or is there a problem? is the full load adjustment the next step?

Adjust the full load screw. While you are in there throw out the rack limiter. Then build a customazing propane setup. Don't forget to turn the delivery valve holders. Adjust the transmission to deal with your new power and enjoy.
