w140 S350td - Diesel Möhkö
Bought a new daily driver for the winter, got it very cheap.
Always wanted a w140 mercedes, specially a diesel one and now i got one
It was pretty well equipt from the factory, usually dieseli w140 are without options, but this one had black leather, electric seats, automatic clima. etc. Also it had pretty low milage on the meter, usually these euro S diesels have over 500tkm in the meter.
Idea is to make some small preps here and there, to keep it non superturbo if possible
Here's few photos in original shape:
- MB w126 300SD Superturbo (US) -83, Mods: OM617A with custom head work, Master Power Turbo 802332, PP-Diesel custom 7mm IP, China intercooler, KKD-Motorsport exhaust manifold, DIY intake manifold, Coolmist Waterinjection, DIY Supermeter display/datalog with PLX Wideband Lambda, Siekkinen custom 722.3 autotrans, Elbe Performance LSD, Green Filter cold air intake, straight 3" exhaust with two dual 2.5" outputs
- MB r129 500SL AMG (JDM) -94
Full AMG bodykit, full JDM features, modified ECU and exhaust
- MB w123 250E-TT (JDM) -85

RE: w140 S350td - Diesel Möhkö
In the USA its the unreliable 3.5L OM603, 147hp.
Outside the USA it was the turbo OM606, 178hp.

Displacement, power etc.... Also what else was it used in??
This the pre-facelift model S350td with 3.5l OM603 with garrett T3 turbo, no intercooler, first model with ECU controling engine and turbo.
The 3.5l engine is pretty torque beast and moves the massive chassis pretty easy, no complains.
Many have complained that 3.5l om603 is unreliable, but that's only half truth. Here in europe these S350td have been driven hard and long, usually with the same engine (400-600tkm).
Resently i found good thread on this matter were they explaint why there was so many failured 3.5l engines in US and that was because of the low quality diesel. US has lower cetane values for diesel their selling than in Europe and that causes harder knocking and wilder cyliner pressures. It's true that MB made lighter rods for 3.5l engine, but the main problems seems to be in the fuel.

Not the fuel. Only MB knows the actual cause and they won't even acknowledge there was a problem.

I go out of my way to always put 42 cetane in my car instead of the 40 cetane everyone else has here in the states and I definitely notice the difference.
Cetane value for our diesel is 50-55 (Neste Diesel 51), that's typical normal diesel here in Finland.
But my self i usually use diesel 100 addative with diesel (to top cetane even higher) + some 2stroke oil to keep pump and injectors working
Have been using this coctail for over 10years, last diesel MB i drow over 800tkm with original enigne, 300sd was over 500tkm before i made engine overhaul, so no problems here
S350td has been driven over 350tkm with original engine, so let's see how long it will last

Here's few photos of the water injection system.
I tried to keep it as OEM as possible.
So here's more OEM tuning

Tank and pump is made by coolingmist, pump is newer generation 200psi model without the annoying pressure switch, so no pressure humping anymore

I'm running with a 180cc/150psi (208cc/200psi) nozzle. It's rated for 200-300hp.
Today was the first long trip with waterinjection and it seems to be spot on nozzle for this engine. Fuel consumption went down by 2liters, not truthfull because half of the tank wa sdriven without waterinjection, so it should get even better. Drives very smooth, more torque, torque band wider.

What sollution are you running aswell.
Usually with water/ethanol 60:40, have tried also 50:50, but those were on the 300SD superturbo. That trip was with 70:30 water/Ethanol mix.
Next will try with 60:40 water/methanol (as my ethanol stock is out :cool

Water/methanol mix (60:40) seems to work better, gave that much more torque that the tranny started slipping
So next step taking tranny out and to Siekkinen for 600Nm prepup and after that bigger turbo and IP to PP-diesel or Mynä for 7mm element modify

Okay better rods before that

RE: w140 S350td - Diesel Möhkö
Some update on this project. I have been driving around 3000km with the setup and fine tuned the water injection.
With current tune the 1.5gallon tanks lasts for 300km, not so good for MPG but nice power increase when driving WOT
There is big difference in the power if driving with higher meth mix 60:40 and 50:50, 70:30 is too light mix.
Maybe gonna install a 6gallon tank to rear and reverse to original tune, so that it injects little earlier to get better MPG.

Mita Gulu,
I too own a 1993 300SD, and looking for ways to improve its performance as well as MPG. Are you able to share with us the details of your mods or even the DIY?
Greetings from US, I was in Oulainen for New Years back in 2000. My ex was from there (Kaski)
