i had the car sitting since yesterday and when i went to crank it up tonight it would not start... it had a hard time cranking. I taught it was the battery so i went to autozone to check it and the battery was good.
So i bought the Diesel 911 additive by Kleendiesel and removed my fuel filter poured some in there and then the rest in the gas tank. After reinstalling the battering and priming the fuel pump the car started up after 3-4 cranks.
Why does it have a problem of starting when its so cold out? could it also be because my #10 intake vavle is tight could that also be the problem or no?

They need hot air caused by compression from cranking over quickly some members on here run lighter motor oil to help it cranking over faster!
also make sure they add diesel antigell in the fuel in your area if not you may need to add it your self
worst case on the coldest of day's warming your intake with a hair dryer can also help haven't had to do that yet here!!!

01-03-2010, 10:57 PM #3All diesels especially old ones are hard to start in cold weather! Here in Colorado almost all of the ones out here have a block heater to help!

17*f shouldn't be an issue. When it gets down to -10*f or lower, thats when you need to seriously consider a block heater. Above -10*f though, glowplugs alone should be plenty to start.

17*f shouldn't be an issue. When it gets down to -10*f or lower, thats when you need to seriously consider a block heater. Above -10*f though, glowplugs alone should be plenty to start.

Also where do they sell block heaters or the coolant hose heaters for a 300sd w116 chasis.
Diesel giant only has it for the w123 and w126 chasis

01-04-2010, 11:58 AM #5The car only has 160k on it and its taken care of really nicely... I installed everything new on it... Its only 20 degress out and yet its still a bitch to get started... I gotta depress the pedal alittle to get the motor to start up.

Charged the battery, 20 minutes of torpedo heater, away we go. Stopped to top off my tank where I usually do, pumps were bagged. Come back next week, diesels on sale again, labelled as winter diesel. I probably helped clean out his summer tank.
This morning, 15F, 2 glows, hit the starter, no problems.

You didn't mention what kind of oil you are using. Should be 5w40. We were down in single digits last week and I started first full rotation everytime. Shuddered until everthing warmed up a bit. Could also be the starter going out.....

To start off i bought Monark glow plugs from Mercedes source 2 months back. the plugs were made in germany and they said wer suppose to be better quality then bosch. THE MONARK PLUGS ARE STRAIGHT UP GARBAGE. 4 of the plugs were burned out and only one of the plugs was working. But the plug that was working only heated up at the towards the bottom INSTEAD of the top were its suppose to
.I removed all plugs scrubbed and reamed all holes to remove the carbon buildup and replaced with all new original Bosch plugs. i havent driven car in couple days and temperature was same when the car was having problems starting.
THE car started right up without any hesitation on the first try. so i will stress to stick with the original parts on these cars and not with aftermarket.. especially the glow plugs.

I only use bosch plugs. The old engine originally had some autolites. The tip broke off, broke the pintle in the prechamber and then went out thru the valve train and exhaust. FI absolutely hates mercedessource. I buy most of my parts at buymbparts.biz these days. If you dont like his online prices chat him up or call him, he can almost always do better but may take a few more days on delivery.
