A lightbulb went off over on one of the G-wagen sites and I thought I'd run the idea by you guys in case it's been done or there's known reasons not to do it.

the idea:
get an M110 flywheel and clutch (bigger, heavier duty clutch but less weight)
machine a steel ring to fit on top of the outer lip of the M110 pressure plate to give it more rotational mass.

pros:
quite a few G-wagen guys are swapping out their M110's for 617s. most came stock with 4-speed manual trannies but they are switching over to the sedan automatic because of the high cost and scarcity of G- clutch parts. so finding a way to reuse the M110 clutch seems pretty cool to me.

cons:
It seems pretty straight forward but machining the ring may not be that easy. it would need a pretty big lathe. Would have to figure out where to source the chunk of iron too. maybe a cut from a pipe of the right diameter that is then milled to spec.

Why not use a 240D flywheel and M110 clutch? It will take a LOT of weight to get it even close to a 240D's mass.

M110:OM616:OM617
The 617 FW weighs 38lbs and the 616 about 10lbs less.
           

Also, as seen in the second picture, if you make a ring it will have to clear the starter nose.

Why not use a 240D flywheel and M110 clutch? It will take a LOT of weight to get it even close to a 240D's mass.

M110:OM616:OM617

I'm told the 240D clutch isn't strong enough for the weight of the G-wagen. the 300GD clutch is a bit bigger and the M110 clutch is bigger yet.

that shouldn't be hard - I'm thinking the ring would sit direclty on top of the pressure plate and use the same bolt holes to hold it on like a sandwich

I'm told the 240D clutch isn't strong enough for the weight of the G-wagen. the 300GD clutch is a bit bigger and the M110 clutch is bigger yet.

I was assuming the M110 clutch was bigger but I haven't measured yet (I have one but it's not separated from the engine yet).

But the more I think of it, the more it seems like an iffy idea.

AFAIK there are only 2 sizes during those years, 21cm and 23cm. I have the 23cm setup which is great for low rpm higher torque operations (getting up on the ramps has never been easier). Otherwise I would just stick with the 21cm setup, there are a variety of pressure disks with different pressures which should be more than adequate for anything you can throw at it.

AFAIK there are only 2 sizes during those years, 21cm and 23cm. I have the 23cm setup which is great for low rpm higher torque operations (getting up on the ramps has never been easier). Otherwise I would just stick with the 21cm setup, there are a variety of pressure disks with different pressures which should be more than adequate for anything you can throw at it.
