FYI. I have never used any of them, but would consider doing so on next build if compounds are not doing well enough.

Not plug and play, no. I mean I have more than one product that can do it but none of them have boost control as a primary function, they're designed to do other things but can also do boost control.

Boost control for any kind of modern diesel really should be based on a computed air demand. Running the intake pressure up to some arbitrary value just adds to exhaust back pressure at times when the engine isn't at full output. And that is basically 99% of the time.

Even the relatively simple ECU on the OM606 does this with the computer controlled wastegate. It runs the pressure up high enough to meet the fueling and no more. The wastegate is constantly moving back and forth in order to manage boost and provide back pressure for EGR performance.

Doesn't really matter if it is modern or not. The vanes will get closed down all the way even if there is no need for boost.

Yeah, but that just means to control the VNT properly a throttle position sensor must be fitted as well as engine speed sensor so the pressure target can be varied depending on throttle position and engine speed.

what are your power goals? you said you want something quick spooling for down low torque and drivability but how much power do you want? if all your aiming for is 3-400 thats doable with a nice single that will light quite quickly. for example for the price of that vnt controller and a good HE351 you could get a borg warner EFR 7163 which would have much the same response while also being a more responsive turbo with more features as well.

Shouldn't be too complicated to make a controller with some basic electrical knowledge, and for far less money, I'd say 50-100 dollars max for the entire project.

300-400 HP out of a 617-95X is quite a large amount.  The EFR 7163 doesn't come with a T3 but that can be overcome.
I'd like to have more than the low 200's- but not more than 300.  I don't want to be buying and installing new transmissions on a regular basis...  plus I don't have a LSD.

a Holset HX30 will support around 250 at the max. the HE221W im running now will do about the same and it lights well below the torque converter stall. if you are aiming for less than 300 then theres no point really in going vnt. the controllers you were looking at are mostly for larger modern VNT turbos like a HE351 but that is good for more like 350-400HP. below 300 there are plenty of readily available options for much cheaper than a controller and turbo that will light low enough to make for a fun drive.
