Hello 

I own an old G300 GD mercedes with the old OM617 engine. Since it has no turbo and weighs over 2t, it runs very very slowly with it's 88 ps.

I was thinking about making an upgrade to an OM617A engine with a turbo because it is very easy to mount and only the intake is different. I live in Romania and these engines are very rare here, since they where used only on a few w123 and only in the american w126 300 SD.This is the reason why i need your help.

Since i want to swap the engine, i was thinking about upgrading the turbo & pump before mounting it on.
I have read a lot of threads on this engine but it is not clear which would be the best combination. 

For the pump, i think that the best solution would be the one with 7.5cc elements from dieselmekken,or? As for the turbo, i do not know what to choose in order not to modify the whole intake. Do i have to change the stock injectors when changing pump and turbo?


I do have about 2500 eur for this project and do not want to swap any internals in the engine. What max power can i expect with stock internals from this engine?

Do you know if there are any aftermarket  intercooler kits for this engine?

Pm about the pump.
I belive i have a turbo set too. Original to 617A.
Maybe i can help u out with some other issues.
The injectors may be the same as N/A although the precups are diff. Upgrading to turbo ones includes cutting on the head nothing special.
But u may already have the turbo type head and engine with oil squirts.
That is something it needs. Then its about it.
Its the turbo and the pump that will make all the diff.

Hello and thanks for the answer. If i understood you correct, does it mean that i can upgrade my engine to the turbo version? That would be great, since i have the engine serial number in the documents of the car and would not have to change the papers with the new engine serial code.

How can i see if i have the needed pistons and oil squirts? I do not know which mecanic would risk and drill the oil squirts in the engine block here in Romania.
What turbo set do you have?

If u have a original gd300 probably it is the latest engines produced. Being in an ofroad vehicle must have oil cooling and piston cooling.
I have original turbo from 617A.
U can check the squirts by removing the pan. Or asking MB by the engine nr and chassis nr.

Yes they have it in the system... they implemented the Epc in early 90thies when your vehicle was still under 10 years.
It is easyer to ask than remove the pan....
I' m almost sure it has , but beeing a eastern build we nwver know.

There is one mounted at the bottom of each cylinder.
And yes you have to remove the lower oil pan (the big one with like 20 allen bolts) in order to see them

I went to the MB service and NZScott, unfortunately you are right.
I do not have these oil nozzles. I do not know what to do,but i guess that a small turbo will not destroy the engine in time.

Is there any possibilty to mount the oil nozzles or do i have to start making wholes in my engine?

In this condition, what would you advise me to do? I have seen that Barrote has a nice IP for sale, but i do not know what would be the result if i couple that IP with a turbo and some bigger nozzles? I have also seen some setups with the standard IP + nozzles and a BMW GT2256V turbo, which worked as far as i know on the long term.

Just run cool EGTs and you should be fine - that's what I plan on anyway.

New (injector) nozzles aren't necessary if they work ok. Yea sure I put some 315s in... but they're not needed for power
