There seems to be two styles of pistons for the turbo OM 617. The OEM Mercedes Noral with a solid skirt around the piston pin, and the Mahle with a recess on either side of the piston pin. Does anyone know what year has what piston.

Interesting. Those pistons are tough any reason for the change? Just curious.

the only time i have seen the pistons with the recesses is in NA engines and generally only the after-market replacements.

This is a core engine I got from a neighbor. and it was a turbo motor. I have another engine out of a car that only had 105,000 miles on it and it has the recessed pistons also.

This was a core motor I got from my neighbor. When I tore it down it had #1 rod bearing out. The piston was beat up and #2 piston had some scoring from trash in the oil. I have three engines torn down and two of them have the recess skirts and one has the solid skirt.
