Ok so I have poked around on some forums but there are some people here that seem familiar with tuning the edc16 ecu for the om648.
I am curious what people are using for tuning? BDM, which ones. What hardware and tuning software? I have found some stuff but it is not cheap? I do not want junk but do not know enough not to go after the expensive stuff?

Software that can be used is WinOLS.

BDM100 clones can be found on ebay for cheap. BDM is a much more stable solution than trying to achieve it via OBD, I advise you to not use OBD...

You should PM Baldur. I think he is wanting to build an ECU for the 648 but lacks a "mule" to do it. Maybe you guys can develop one together. He's a great guy and has been really supportive as my Baldur DSL1 controlled F150 swap nears completion. Probably a lot of folks would buy this.

I really have no interest in an aftermarket solution for these engines. The factory ecus are cheap to buy and I can set them up to be used in any application. I just want to get into tuning them.
Nothing against Baldur but if I was going to go down that road anyways it would be with Bosch or Motec.

Do you have reasonable explanation for choosing only Bosch/Motec ?

They are the only ones on the market that actually have the ability to correctly run a common rail that I could find. And they are not any more expensive than the other products out there. I spent several years looking into this before I pulled the trigger on going after the factory ecu. I spent just as much money getting the factory ecu to work but I can easily duplicate it and it works perfectly. Every time.
If you want a tractor pulling engine that runs the engine that is easy to do. But the dynamics in running one of these is really complicated and

I'm going to pick up an 05,06 CDI car in the near future so let me know how your tuning ability progresses. Can you make the oe 648 ecu talk to any TCU or is that in the future?

Rocketchips has a tune for the om648 that gives 426 ft-lbs of torque. I've used Jeff Robertson there for many TDI tunes. Pretty good for a non-all out race engine.  Are you basically wanting to develop your own for that market?

I am not reprogramming anything in the factory ecu. It is all done through the PCS TCM-2800. So the answer is no. I could run a few different transmissions with the tcu but I am not sure with the current firmware what works and does not on other transmissions.

As far as tuning goes for power. Yes I am thinking of doing my own tunes.

Evgeniy1987 is absolutely correct. BDM carries the least risk when uploading and downloading to the ecu.

I have been tuning my own 05 CDI for a little over a year now with Winols and a variety of other tools.  It has been my only experience with ecu tuning and I have not yet attempted to tune any other cars except my own.  In addition to the mapping changes I installed AMG injectors and removed the egr system from the engine.

I could write a book on this topic, but I'll keep it short.

I use the OBD tool KESS 4.036 to read and flash the ecu.
I have a BDM100 as a backup in case the OBD tool bricks the ecu.
I change the mapping with Winols.
I have had bad luck with the OBD tool MPPS and don't recommend it.
I have an extra ecu just in case.

Let me know if you have any questions.  Hopefully I can help prevent some of the mistakes I made.

As said, do full BDM read and then you can flash with some prooven tool over OBD relatively safe. There is plenty of information on maps, factors etc. for this ECU unlike previous EDC15. Smile

Ex: 525tds 130kW, C250TD 160kW, E320CDI 200kW, ML400CDI 230kW, A6 R5TDI 130kW
Now: Q7 V8TDI 240kW, 320d 150kW, 335d 210kW

What should I expect to pay??

Well its either china for cheap or original for thousands as far as I know. I bought v54 Galletto according to all knowing internet reviews, took it apart and changed all critical parts for quality brands. It works. For BDM only BDM100 tool should be good. Also google before you do anything. Big Grin Those pesky ECUs are all different, some EDC16s can be flashed all day and other just crap on you and ruin your day. (Ford)
