I am new to this forum and am just getting to know diesels, the w124 and the om606 engine and it's tuning possibilities. I have a 1995 e300 D w124 which just received a 5 speed swap (717.460) and 240mm clutch kit. I've also fitted it with a 3.27 LSD fully rebuilt from a cosworth. This project is headed into turbo land but a modest setup, looking for efficiency, good power and an engine that breaths the best it can. Tubular manifold, water to air intercooler, 3 SS exhaust and a W/A injection setup are in the works. Hoping to get 48 MPG on the highway but maybe that is optimistic—don't need more than 225 HP here.

My issue at the moment is figuring out why the car has trouble starting? It seems there is too much fuel at start up as I get black smoke and I have to sit there and crank over the engine for 4 seconds or so to get it to fire up. Once it does and warms up everything seems to run smoothly. The EGR system has been removed and vacuum lines properly secured. The resonance flap under the manifold doesn't seem to move at idle or when I rev past 3500.

The previous owner mentioned (after brand new head and injectors and glow plugs) that the shop turned IP up a bit to try and get more power but this doesn't seem to do much without more air...so I guess I am just trying to figure out how to get a quick easy startup, what do I need to adjust? I can post pics/videos if that helps.

A secondary question, once the turbo setup is in place, does the resonance flap vacuum system need to stay or can all that be removed?

Just out of curiosity but did it still run like that when the engine had warmed up??

I am about to have to remove the IP and send it down for the 7.5mm and ALDA for a rebuild so I guess this problem will sort itself out once re-installed and tuned by this shop.

I am really curious how the water/alcohol injection will fair once this rig is boosted. I've been warned not to exceed 250 HP as the .910 and the 717.460 5 speed might not like it.

Some chaps on this forum have been running big numbers with the .910, however the 1st limiting factor is the box. With 250 you will have to treat it carefully - no clutch popping!

W124 om606 HX40 finished and it's a beauty 450bhp/456ft-lbs

Oops, not yet. I quite like my superpump.
I should really try find a nozzle for my water injection setup
