Hi,

I'm thinking of buying a van to build a camper. Since fuel in The Netherlands is expensive, i'm thinking of putting in a OM606.
Would like a Chevy Express or a Ford Econoline. Gearbox should be automatic (TH400?).
Does this sound like a plan, or am i wasting my time?
Any thoughts?

I dont think you will save that much fuel...Since the 606 is old prechamber Technology and it will run under constant stress in a big camperSmile

I have installed my spare 603 turbo with 722.3 trany into 1986 Dodge Van. With 3.4 rear end it runs out of steam at 115km/h. And doesn't like hills!
It is not a rocket but fuel economy is same as my 1987 300TD - 12 l/100 km.
The engine I used have had over 400 000 km prior to conversion. Not a power house by any means.
The 606 is more powerful by at least 50%. You don't need T400 trany I think in stock T350 should do.
For sure no need for OD type transmission. IIRC the DieselPumpUK converted Ford pick up to 606 with moded pump.

My personal opinion would be to buy a tow along (pop-up) camper which can be pulled by a 606 powered, fuel efficient and fun car.
This way you don't have to register, inspect, fuel or insure a second vehicle - just a trailer.

Also, unless they've built some recently, there aren't hills to worry about in the Netherlands.

Stept off this idea after a camper trip thru the States. Totaly not practical. Building a Jaguar/Daimler OM606 now.
