As above, for sale is my dogleg box from a previous plan.

Gearbox turns freely with no clunks, all three selectors work fine and the gearbox appears to be in good nick. The gearbox comes with the linkages however I hadn't got to buying a shifter before I changed my mind. 

If you're genuinely interested, please get in touch and I can send a couple of pictures to verify part numbers etc etc. 

By my understanding, this is the box from the 16v 190's, thus accepts a single mass flywheel, and is rated to a higher output than the .450's.

I have the gearbox on eBay at £550, but I'm fairly open to offers. I'd be even more open to offers including an om603 mechanical pump and/or a holset h1c/similar, on the off chance that anyone has either.

It's a pity you're in the UK. I think shipping would kill it for me. But I'm interested in having one for spares.

How good is the input shaft bearing & seal? That bearing is NLA at this time and is a common point of failure. While you cannot hear any noise with the box on the bench, once it goes into a car, it becomes very obvious.
The reverse idler gear is also a problem which cannot be detected unless the box is mated to a running engine.

If you have verified these are OK, then the purchase price (along with a guarantee) seems reasonable.
Oh, and behind a diesel, you want the 717.452 that came in certain 124 & 129 models, behind the m104. That box has the higher torque rating and accepts dual-mass flywheels also, which is particularly useful in offroad vehicles.

Hi Joe, haven't run the box myself so I'm not sure on the bearing, from visual inspection the seal looks good. Again, I've read different things, I can't be sure on the strength of either as I haven't broken either of them.

I'll drop you a pm, perhaps I can persuade you.

hahahaaa  I have a 716.6 sitting here, with 22,000km on it. hilarious.
The 717.404 is about 2 times as strong internally, all you need to do is look inside. Are you wanting the 6 speed because of the dogleg's 1:1 final ?

It's true they are rarer here - but the reasons are straightforward.

MB's in Australia are positioned as a premium luxury car, and the datacard specifications of most models are quite markedly different from their european counterparts.

for example, you'd never have found a manual transmission in an e class, and the 4cyl variants are almost non-existent. 6cyl and v8's were the mainstay. 

well that was once upon a time.  even our om617's here were auto in the w123's. hardly a manual box to be found. that changed with the 201 - when we got the luxury car sales tax, and MB Aust marketed a stripped out 201, to fall under the threshold.  they were stupid times.

the 716.6 I have came from a w210, and a very rare order for local delivery.   We never got the 201.034 here, all are grey imports. instead we got the 201.029, - full-fat version with the lot. (and auto)
Now of course, everythign is different. 1.8L turbo diesel 4 cyl 204's and 205's, diesel s-class... something that would have been seen as absurd even 5 years ago here, because an s class has to be a 5 litre v8 or a 6 litre v12! that was (still is really) the mentality of the australian buyer, because that is how MB marketed their vehicles here....

It's a shame, because manual transmissions can really make a Mercedes engine come alive.

The shifter - I believe you're thinking of the dogbone style as used on the BMW versions, also on the R170 SLK - the EPC has the parts and diagram for it.
The factory shifter girdle and the reverse selector cable is a PITA. (the one you see on the sedans) Adapting a short-shift BMW unit could work, so long as the lower fork section is the correct length form the ball pivot.
