I have a 606 turbo with newly rebuilt 722.6 in a G 350 G-wagon. I've got it working ok but the temperature of the box is very high. It got up to 120 degrees at speed. The cooler is new. The original G350 configuration is a small rectangular cooler that just sits behind the front chassis rail. It's not rally exposed to air with the bash plate on. I've fitted the 722.6 pipes that connect to the box but had to bend them to fit. The originals have bends to fit. I might have some bends that are too tight. Should I   use this cooler or an integral radiator type?

I assume you mean 120 C.
If so that is way to hot. The radiator coolers work the best. I would recommend that. If you need more than that then you have another problem.

Just a thought, how are measuring the temperature?
Through the controller or a dedicated sensor.
Only asking because I once had very high water temperatures but it turned out that my sensor amd gauge were not compatible....

The 722.6 atf/water exchanger on the 202/210 radiator is compact but if you go to an atf/air exchanger you need to go much bigger in size.
I did this recently and after loads of research and discussions, my 23 row mocal cooler with 9" fan is minimum requirement.
After a motorway drive my atf cooler puts our some serious heat, I need to measure it and see if even that needs upgrading.




Installed:

OM606/722.6, big IC, W220 brakes.
Planned:
DIY manifold, compound, 722.6 controller, built IP.

Hmmm. My 722.3 has now done 570.000km, of which 250.000 had been done without any cooling whatsoever. Still working fine...

In my opinion, an oil/air-heat exchanger is suited best, since thetmperature differential between cooling medium (air) and medium to be cooled (ATF) is much higher, so it must work better. But as Hario pointed out, that's all depending on size. European cars with OM603/606 Turbo got air/oil coolers when A/C & tow bar had been ordered and high transmission loads had to be expected.

Also the idea behind it is that you separate the heat output of the transmission from the engine cooling circuit. With high engine output, this is a good idea to decrease the overall heat-input the engine coolant has to deal with.

Ok. Had a look today. My oil cooler was mounted near horizontal behind the chassis 'tube 'with the incoming and out going connections at virtually the same height off the ground. There were no fins facing the air flow. The under-ride protector has been removed. I csnt test it right now as i eorkingbon it. Could this be the cause? Pics show the cooler released from its bracket. I checked temp's with a thermometer and it's correct.

Ok all sorted. The box was was overfilled by about 2 litres and my shift speeds were set wrongly.

Still, it's only cooling with air convection, perhaps add a fan or a duct? Constant hot running deteriorates the ATF quicker.
