Have a strange problem. I think the timing is not correct cuz i get white, blue and grey smoke instead of black on different settings. If u turn the pump up to fuel it with 180cc in neutral i get also brown/gray smoke.

This video is from the first startup with the pump from Finland: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ds2-c7E5HQ

Its hard to start cold and have a bad idle. Warm start is no problem.

I have change the injectors, checked cam timing, removed the electric pre-pump, pump timing also checked compression of the cylinders. Tried from 18 BTDC to 30 BTDC. Pump builder say it should be 20 BTDC.

This engine ran fine with the Dieselmeken 7,5mm last year. Only change this winter was pump, pre-pump, pre-chamber (drilled every second hole from 2,2mm to 2,4mm) and harder valve springs.

i´ve seen that every now and then,
usually is the pump sincrinization and timing, a 8mil element is bit dificult to set is easy to charge too much on one cylinder , then thats all smoke ...comes to life.. despite that .... couldn´t see nothing from that vídeo Wink
BTW that is not a DI the smoke with the engine unloaded tend to be a lot more grey than blackWink
try a timing light , set to 18.5 and if it pulls well is just the question of pump tunning, fine tuning Wink
good luck then

Its an IDI. If i turn the alda down to minimum i get a little black smoke. Turn it up i get grey. If i turn it up more i get grey white. Turn it up to maximum i get a dense light brown cloud.
They told me that i need to put a couple of 100 kilometers for the pump to settle.

From what i have read:
Black smoke = High combustion temp
Grey/white smoke = Low combustion temp

Well im off to the garage to fix the hunting idle.

8mm element seems to need some more love from the owner then 7,5mm.

Sorry to say , but sometimes when i mess with pumps not all of them work great at fist fire... sometimes they have to return to me ... cause its not easy to fix them in place by someone who does not understand the governor balance... daddad
i belive u have a small problema with the pump , nothing that u can´t correct ... try to ask the pump builder directions.
yes IDI ´s tend to make grey smoke when unloaded , diff from DI´s wich puf black even with right boost...
and yes withe low combustion press, black rich mixture, blue smoke and grey maybe both hehhehe
regards

Well im going to do some test drive first to see how the performance is.
The guy in Finland that build this pump is no noob but i know that sometimes shit could happen.
I have a spare pump i could use and send this back for some testing if needed. Or test this in another engine.

Now when i think about it. The pump is from a tractor puller and they blow grey smoke before load. Wink

Pump builder accidently put the timing mark on #4 cylinder.

Im supprised it even started up. But it was hard to start when cold. Now it fires right up from cold and idles fine.

Inside of pump? Well that does not have much in common with setting pump out of timing.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ex: 525tds 130kW, C250TD 160kW, E320CDI 200kW, ML400CDI 230kW, A6 R5TDI 130kW
Now: Q7 V8TDI 240kW, 320d 150kW, 335d 210kW

I think it have been droped sometime because the splines was damage when i was going to mount the pump. 2/3rd of the crack looked old and 1/3 was twisted. It broke just before the first bearing.

Going to send the pump for repair this week together with a good original pump to take the spares needed for the repair.

As for the engine i have like 0-0,5bar in oilpressure when running the starter and the cams are very hard to rotate so i think it have been hiting some valves. Atleast i had some luck because my intake cam looks like it is in one piece.
