On the om617a there is a large bolt that holds the timing indicator on the block, can this bolt be removed without ill effects?  What does this bolt do? I just need to replace the indicator.

The large bolt holds the timing indicator on and also allows access to the oil galley plug in the block. You can remove it with no problem. The smaller nut under it has a pin on it for the chain guide and allows access to the lower oil galley plug.
