Yeah, somebody's conversion. If I had $2500 I would have seriously considered it since I have family in CA that could pick it up for me. Maybe they will relist it cheaper.

A VNT15 from a TDI would give that 23hp engine a nice boost.

I agree, however, would that "air cooled" engine be able to handle turbocharging? Or would it heat stress it (overheat it)? Huh
Just occurred to me, this must be the "marine" diesel version, that is, it's turning reverse, compared to a non-marine. I recall the SBC VW Bug conversions required a "marine cam" to support the rotation direction the transaxle / engine connection requires.

Nice, simple and super economical conversion i guess, but those air cooled diesels are really noisy when not buildt in to a sound proofed cabinet! I love it!

Why bother with a sub-100hp diesel for a 'rice' application when you could just get a TDI? Unless you don't like having a diesel that can be easily rechipped to put out like a 1.8t (or 2.0t) (180-200hp) with no other modifications or parts. Plus they come attached to six speed transmission.

A TDI in a CRX would be killer even with all stock parts. I remember having to retune and rerun the Z06 Vette (800hp, down to 650 was actually faster around the track) to beat the CRX Si I'd set up in Gran Turismo 3. I was using Laguna Seca as a testing ground to see what the maxed out cars sat in relation to one another. Eventually I got the Vette to beat the CRX, but it took some doing.

An easier swap (though not as good of a chassis) would be an A2/A3 Jetta or Golf. VW FWD mounts were the same up through the A4 chassis, not sure about the A5. Many people have swapped in a VR6 into a second gen Golf or Jetta and cleaned up at the track, and that was with the wimpier 12v version we got in the states. 1.8t swaps are also common. TDIs aren't cheap but they're probably cheaper than a 606 even with the transmission attached.

In either chassis, you'd have around 150 hp to start with, a six speed, and less than 2500 lbs (A3), going down to about 2k lbs (CRX). Plus, any of the above would get ridiculous mileage, with the CRX probably taking the crown, being the lightest.
