Any ideas on how and if it would be possible to install a remote start system on an om617a?  I'd like to cool down/warm up my vehicle from inside my house.

I bought a 2 channel garage door style remote kit, one for the GPs and one for the starter. Yet to fit it though so can't really suggest how to wire it.

1978 300D, 373,000km... OM617.912 with a Holset HX30W, 7.5mm IP, 711.113 5 speed (project car, 7 years off the road and counting ;/)
1977 250 270,000km (parts car)
1977 300D (ex 280) 500,000km

1981 240D 498,000
1975 HJ45 ???,000
2001 2.8TD Rodeo 4x2 - 456,000 - DD

Its not hard, most remote start kits have a function for preglow. The most difficult part is adding a vacuum solenoid to vent vacuum away from the ignition switch since it will be in the shut off position and will not allow the engine to start with vacuum present.

What about those pre-heaters which are basically a small box with a diesel burner inside and they connect into the coolant ciruit, probably heater hoses and they warm up the coolant. In England they were sold as a 'Kenlowe Hotstart' and I saw one fitted OEM on a 2004 BMW X5. Most of them seem to be electric now.

Or just get a Bluetooth receiver from eBay and wire it to the ignition switch through a relay and then start stop it from your phone.. Wink

Installed:

OM606/722.6, big IC, W220 brakes.
Planned:
DIY manifold, compound, 722.6 controller, built IP.
[i]Less rust..

I had a Eberspacher Hydronic (the water one!) coolant heater on a smart CDI a few years ago. It would preheat the engine to 80c in a few minutes, like 10 max. would start up on 100% vegetable oil like that. and when it got to 60c or something it would turn the heater matrix blower on.... i used to leave it on screen and slow speed. i never had a frosty car! mine came with a timer, set it to 7am and 7:10am i would drive to work in my warm car! the timer outpt was just an "on" signal (cant recall if 12v or switched to earth) but easy to control with anything else.

Don't get stung though, many CAN / vehicle specific units are sold out there claiming "great for preheat or boats" but unless you have the correct controller then it isnt that easy.

W639 Vito OM606 + 722.6 STD - in progress

Current progress: engine in, gearbox in, bumper bar modified to accept w210 radiator, audi electric fan, very tight squeeze, interior stripped out ready for new seats (w211) and custom dash with w211 clocks controlled by arduino with split fuel gauge covering main tank and auxiliary for Veg Oil ...

- DSL1 ECU for Electronic OM606 Pump (currently fitting wiring)
Next; 722.6 Controller, HX40 with homemade manifold, Air-to-water intercooler, homemade exhaust, MOT.... One day!
