I've got a '77 240D and the piston rings finally tuckered out. I want to put in a 5 cyl turbo diesel and will tweak it to get some more power out of it. I don't need insane power but I'd like the car to be able to get out of its own way.

I'd like recommendations of what motor would be a nice easy swap that will still allow some tinker room and what type of donor car to be looking for. I plan to swap the entire drive train.
All the numbers, W124, 616, 627, are all getting jumbled. Undecided

W123/W126 OM617 is the only thing that will not involve a lot of fabrication.

Did they move the motor mounts for a w126 chassis?

yes as well as the w116 300sd but they unbolt off the side of the engine! the w116 300sd 79-80 had the turbo om617 and should also fit! I'm doing that today but in to a 300d

You don't say!

The w116...that's a chassis before my '77, yes? Are the engines from the w126 the same way? The motor mounts unbolt?

The w116 was made from 1975?-1980 it was the S class Mercedes. 300sd 79-80 the first turbo diesel car ever built, gas 280se 350se 450se and 6.9. But the diesel is the 300sd and the engine mounts bolt on the side of the engine all of the 5cyl diesel made form the 70 till mid 80,s where om617 and some are turbo and some are not! but they are all almost identical.

all S class Mercedes diesels 300SD had the turbo diesels! w116 79-80 and w126 81-86 the S class is there big car!

and all the w123 300d after 82-85 where turbo in the U.S 77-81 w123 300d had the non turbo 5cyl w123 and are compared as an E class mid sized car

the w123 240d 4cyl where never factory turbocharged but some after market kits where out there

Thanks for the info. Cool

How do the transmissions and rear ends fit from one of these chassis into a w123?
