Interested to see what turbochargers people here have on which engines and at what RPM they start producing usable boost at.
Cheers!

Hx30 on a 617 with a tweaked stock pump. It starts to boost around 1800-2000. Full boost shortly after. It would be a lot faster with a big pump

'82 300D -3" straight pipe, ALDA deleted, 3in1 glowshift gauge, HX30, egr-less manifold, A/W intercooler Big Grin

Thats decent spool time. The 617 is older? Is it the 8 valve 3.0?

His is a 617, 10 valve. As is mine.

My old setup was an Holset HE341 on the stock EGR exhaust manifold, connected to the stock exhaust. Had a 6mm 90cc pump with no ALDA. Has a large Air to Air intercooler with somewhat long piping.

Started to spool (5lbs) about 2400rpm, full boost (22lbs) by 3000rpm.

Many many factors to consider that effect spool - fuel, exhaust manifold, manual or auto trans, intercooled or not, ect ect.

1984 300D 4-speed ~200,000 miles
7.5mm M-pump, GT3582 turbo, F-Tune Performance intake/exhaust manifolds, A/A intercooler, 315 nozzles, Enlarged prechambers, Bosch 044 feed pump, Custom lightweight flywheel with 240mm clutch, Lowered, 17" AMG rims - 300 hp OM617 project
1985 300D 280,000 miles RIP
2001 F350 7.3 DP tuner, 4"exhaust, S&B intake

Sorry I'm still thinking 4 cylinders as opposed to 5 I guess! Thats still decent considering a he341 isn't a small turbo.

Also, spool is hard to factor in, as it can change by air tempurature, engine load, fuel quality, etc etc.
But what we say is a rough estimate, you just got watch because some people will say it "spools" and it's building 1psi and others says it "spools" and it's building 30psi. It's a hard term to put a number to because there are no set standards for it Smile

of course we all know 1 psi boost in a Vtech is enough to blow the head clean off Wink but yes I agree it is difficult to put an exact point on it as different cars react differently but most people here have the same or similar engine so would be the closest of comparisons. My last diesel, 206 2.0 hdi, spooled about 1800 rpm had approximately 1 bar by then and had a gt2052v but quite a long and convoluted intercooler path which didnt help
