Just talk to the guy, he said he wants an extra $100 for the IP.  He said it was running when he parked it.  I asked him if he can start it and let me inspect it while its running, and he said he can do that.  Buy stuff from Craigslist always seems a little sketchy, but for $450 it seem like its worth a shot.

What should I look for when I go to check it out?  Would you guys buy it even if it was running a little rough, or would you pass?

Hi Hario, thanks for the reply!

Thats a brilliant idea!  Ive never bought a used motor and I've got no experience with the 603, but I'm definitely going to do that now.  

How would I hook a rig like that up?  I understand the fuel part but i don't know how to energize the glow plugs with the battery.

Hi Hario, thanks for the reply!

Thats a brilliant idea!  Ive never bought a used motor and I've got no experience with the 603, but I'm definitely going to do that now.  

How would I hook a rig like that up?  I understand the fuel part but i don't know how to energize the glow plugs with the battery.

Hope it works out. FWIW we talked to that guy a week or two ago and he said it was out of the car at that point so it couldn't be test run. He also said the IP was off the engine and possibly sold. If he did take it off and put it back on hopefully they checked timing or it definitely won't run well. I've seen two cars with #22 head for $1k here in the bay area in the last few months so a gamble on a probably rough shape 603 from an owner who doesn't seem to know whats going on isn't that appealing to me.

He told us a shop was pulling the parts off the car? Seemed kinda sketchy so we decided to pass..

Yeah, when I talk to the guy I got the feeling he really didn't know what he was doing.  I think he either owns the shop or just works there, when I asked him what would be a good time do drop in and look at the motor he said it was a shop and I could come buy anytime.  If I do make it out there and the pump is not on the motor I'm only going to offer him a couple hundred.  At the same time I don't want to waste the fuel and time driving to Santa Cruz just to see a pile of parts he calls an engine.

I really want to get a 606 but I haven't found one yet.  Do you have any leads on a localish 606?  I also want to get another 617 but the only one I've seen lately is in Galt and the guy says its got low compression, so I'm definitely going to pass on that.  Do you have any leads on a decent 617?

Might be able to find a 617.. A friend of mine has some, and the guy who owns the storage place I store my 5th wheel at owns a dismantling company and told me he has 10 of them. When I asked before he said $600 for a turbo engine complete so thats not too bad in my opinion. I've seen whole cars go for close to that though. I personally bought one up in sac with a bad trans for $600.

Might be able to find a 617.. A friend of mine has some, and the guy who owns the storage place I store my 5th wheel at owns a dismantling company and told me he has 10 of them. When I asked before he said $600 for a turbo engine complete so thats not too bad in my opinion. I've seen whole cars go for close to that though. I personally bought one up in sac with a bad trans for $600.

I live in Brentwood, its about 20 miles east of concord.
I'd definitely be interested in a 617 around that price range.  If you ever talk to the guy or happened to run into one that needs a good home I'm your guy.

Wheres my best place to try and find a 606 around here?  I'm constantly on craigslist looking, but no luck yet.  Also all the yards I've called haven't had one.

606 will be tough to find. I saw a 606 NA engine at pick n pull in stockton once a few months ago. I have an app that searches craigslist every 5 min so I just setup my searches and wait for it to beep Wink

I know a guy in Antioch who works on MB's at his house. He might have a 617 for you. He had a 603 with a #17 head but it needs the main seals replaced. He advertises on craigslist a lot so you may have seen his ads, name is Jeff.
