Hi everyone,

I have three difrent vehicles I want to swap 617s into but they don't make transmission adapter plates for my aplications.  So im planning on making my own.  I was wondering if anyone has made their own adapter plate?

Thanks guys!

Several people have.. I believe there is a thread on here where someone made their own plate. Used some clear plastic or something to mock things up then replicated it with metal. Look through the threads, there is some info here. I have no experience with this process personally.

'98 E300 Turbo "Juliette" - Brabus wheels and almost all the options a w210 could have
'87 300D Turbo "Roxanne" - #22 head - 400E brakes - EGR Delete - 17" Staggered AMG 5 spoke rims from CLK500 - 5 Spd manual
2007 Chevy 2500HD CCSB Duramax with about 400-500 rwhp depending on the tune I use Big Grin
1983 300D Silver Exterior/Black inside - Sold and will be missed, may we never meet in a PnP.

What 3 transmissions are you planning to use?
Someone on here may be working on a solution already.
I've got an E21 & E60 bmw manual transmissions that I'm planning to mate to a 617 & 606, respectively, and neither has a ready-made plate available so I'm in the same boat.
Maybe we can collaborate.

'05 Jeep Liberty CRD - 160k
'06.5 VW Jetta TDI - 230k
'82 MB 300TD - 116k (motor going to raysorenson)
'81 MB 300TD - 195k (parting out)
'71 Jeep DJ5 - diesel conversion project

Hi CRD4x4,

Thanks for the reply, sorry it took so long to get back to you!

Right now I'm still in the planning stages.  I want to use a GM 6L45, but I'm not sure if its possible because for one transmissions are my weak point and I'm not very knowledgeable on there workings, and two the 6L45 has the control module inside the transmission.

Would it be possible to make a 617/6L45 combination work together?  Im sure I'll need a stand alone controller for the trasmission but I don't really know what else it would take to make this combo work?

As for the adapter plate, they seem pretty straight forward.  I think we just need to make a cad drawing of our designs and send it of to the CNC shop.  The cad drawing and CNC shop option is probably a bit too expensive for me so I'm planning on just taking my time and making one my self at home.  The only problem I see isfor me is the placement of the starter on the 617, seems to give everyone a lot of problems when it comes to custom tranny's and adapter plates.

Dont quote me on any of this cause like I said before I know next to nothing about transmissions, lol.

Id love to hear any of you input and ideas on this.  I probably won't be able to help out too much because of my lack of transmission knowledge, but I'm more then willing to share anything I find out on the subject along the way.

Is there a different 6 speed automatic you would recommend me looking into over the 6L45?

I'm learning too. No shame.
If I were going to use an auto trans I'd stick with what MB intended originally. It won't have 6 gears but it'll fit and can be upgraded internally to handle more torque.
If the trans gearing isn't ideal for your app then consider changinger the rear diff gearing to suit.
The main thing to look for (in my opinion) is a trans from an inline engine. Vee configured engined donors probably won't be helpful - unless they've already been adapted as oem (my Jeep Liberty has a 545RFE V8 auto mated to a inline 4 from the factory, so there are exceptions).
Good luck and don't hesitate to ask the forum for help!
