I wanted to swap a turbo motor into my 76 300D so I grabbed one from an 84. The problems I see now are turbo location and all the linkages that go from trans to throttle. I also gotta figure out power steering. I alway end up diving into these motor swaps with out checking to see who has done them but in the end I usual figure it out but looking for some advice if anyone has done this swap.

The 76 300D is a W115 chassis, right ?? In that case you'll have clearence issues with the brake booster and oil filter housing.

Also the 84 trans should only have a cable and a vacuum connection to the trans AFAIK.

Some time in '84 the pilot hole in the crank got smaller. Make sure there's no issue there.

Yeah its a W115 chassis. It didn't look like the filter housing would hit the booster but more just the bracing bar that is part of the chassis. I will check out the hole though I am using auto box.

not sure what the question is about turbo location but remember the later california manifolds and exhaust setup put the turbo way higher up than federal.

not sure what the question is about turbo location but remember the later california manifolds and exhaust setup put the turbo way higher up than federal.

Yeah it will hit the booster. Not sure if I can hammer the booster a bit to make it work. Does anyone know what others have done about this? I will have to look for this cali manifold. Do you know if it will allow the throttle linkages to go behind it?

When I turbo'd my 75 Merc with the plain egr manifolds, I remember vaguely that I had to chop that engine shock absorber off the "frame". This was with the stock Garrett. The KKK would not fit without doing some frame chopping.

Do you have pics of yours. I have a tiny mitsubishi turbo and not even that would fit. I may try to convert the brakes to hydroboost. I think that may be easiest.

All the linkages Wont go behind the manifold anyways so it's a bad choice. What did you do with your linkages. I am on vacation for 2 more weeks so I got time to plan.

-1980 300SD, 110k, project car. Goal is to get it lookin' like it did on the showroom floor (body and interior wise, not necessarily under the hood )

I don't think so, I'm sorry. I sold the car about 6 years ago. I'll take a look though. I do remember that Garrett was tight (like 1/4 inch from the body).

Yes I do, and I also wish I took more pics of the thing before I sold it! Darn.
What I did was I welded an adjustable arm onto that big throttle bar that runs alongside the back of the engine (on the firewall) and made it long enough to hang over the injector lines above the pump. I put one of those nubs on the end of it and ran a linkage down to the pump. Surprisingly it worked great, and the full travel of the pump and pedal was achieved. Maybe I can make a drawing on MS Paint or something with a photo of a w115. Then in your case you have the Bowden cable for the tranny. I had to modify my tranny linkage hard lines on mine (what a nightmare).
