Hey fellas,

Today my car wouldn't start, it was about -5F outside last night before windchill and about 6F when I tried to start it this morning. I've never had trouble with it starting until last year when it was about -10F and this year. It seems the oil is just too thick to get the engine rolling fast enough. I run Mobil 15w40 in it.
Glowplugs, valve clearances, fuel additive, good battery, etc etc are all in check. Normally I just plug my block heater in, but my sisters dog chewed the plug off  Dodgy

Any input from my fellow cold weather buddies?

I would suggest a couple things:

For an additive route: add Power Service Diesel Kleen in the winter months.
Fix the plug with a magnetic disconnect. So then you can drive away with no worries about ripping it off.
Usual stuff...ream out glow plugs holes...new plugs...clean contacts on glow plug relay fuse.
15w30 maybe...

if it don’t blow black...take it back.

Rotella T-6,5w-40 full synthetic works for me. Never use block heater on my '83 617 and double dwell the glowplugs at 0', starts up nice.

I really think my oil is killing me, it will roll decently fast UNTIL it builds oil pressure, then it just slows it down so much it's worthless. I can hear it trying to fire, but she just can't fire up rolling that slow.
How's your oil pressure at idle when the engine is warm with 5w40?

With 15w40 I sit at about 1.8 bar when at 85C idling

Also, I run stanadyne additive. Works great, no gelling, and adds lubricity.

Mine runs about the same, about 2 bar at 90c. Battery made all the difference for me last year. Tested good at full charge but was a 6 year battery with 1 year left to go and weak cold starting amps. Put a voltmeter on it and start it cold, that'll give you some idea where you're at. Ive been using Howes lubricator, farm country favorite. Never a problem, minus 5 last night.
