i'm planning to fit a w124 electronic speedo to my std conversion. has anyone done this before and if so how do i get a signal to the speedo?

i'm guessing there is a power, ground and signal in at the back of the cluster. signal wise again guessing about using a magnetic pickup to a speedo calibration unit and then to the signal in at the back of the drive.

i could be completely wrong on this....

cheers,

max

The 606 has a pickup for the flywheel. Use the sensor and mate it to the speedo via a signal converter. I've forgotten the name but have a google and you should find something Wink

Flywheel will give revs, not roadspeed.

are you suggesting hooblah that i should use the old CPS and mount it close to the prop for instance where it will get a signal from a passing metal part, feed that signal into a convertor and then power the speedo that way?
do you know which of the 3 pins does what at he back of the eletric 124 speedos?
cheers!

Oops I misread it, I was thinking revs!

I'm using  6 speed box and it has an electronic speedo pickup. I haven't done it yet but I'll be using the Dakota digital converter. Sorry Max I haven't got as far as figuring out the wiring!

IIRC Druk has done this very thing. He's using a sensor with pickups attached to the prop. Might be worth taking a look at his build thread...

This is what's on mine Max.

This is the pick-up straight out a 107 mounted on a bracket which is into the original speedo drive hole. It's held by the original pinchbolt hence the groove. In the OE car it 'sees' four triggers per output shaft rev hence the plate with four lugs.
My car has a 2.47:1 diff from a 380SEL and I got the speedo head from the wreck and a clever guy from the Owners Club took the insides and grafted them into the original 107 speedo. Apparently he can also calibrate them but that wasn't required. It's about 5mph incorrect at 70mph but on the - side so it's safer.
There are only two connections to the back of this speedo head. I'm betting the set-up from a W126 would transfer across to your car. For another slant have a search for the diesel 107 thread by Mach4 on Peachparts. He used pick-ups attached to the propshaft.

Found it. Post #220 http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/dies...ct-15.html

Laser/water cut ring with 4 teeth and weld or press it on propeller shaft or gearbox output shaft flange.

I have these parts for my MB V8 manual gearbox kit (kit for Getrag 265).

Thanks gents, i have purchesed a e420 speedo via the evil bay (should be heading across the pond) and plan to use a dakota unit to drive it. will probably take the signal from one of the front wheels. what senser are you all using? i suspect i will have a go at using an old CPS i have laying about.

Just made conversion with 124 722.6 and w126 electric speedo fitted to 124 dash. Speed taken from front abs sensor and olefejers gearbox controller drives the w126 electric speedo. Works great. Only thing to do would make somekind of linkage to get the trip km reset to work.
