Is this a manual steering gear?
It's in an '83 240d.
I think I found a manual steering box at a salvage yard. It is a ways away for me so I asked them to send me a picture. This looks to me like a power steering box with the hoses removed.

No, if you look to the far right of your snappy, you can see two threaded ports or nipples. Those are the PS lines (albeit removed). Plus, looking at the rubber grommet against the firewall where the lower steering shaft goes through, which is partially out of the picture, it looks too short. Also, not sure the manual box has the adjusting screw which is around center top of the box (I will have to double check.). Remember if you find one at the JY, remove the box with Pittman Arm attached and the make sure you get the lower steering shaft and the rubber boot (grommet, which is around 3" long vs. 2" PS one).

These manual steering gears are hard to find. I'll keep looking.

12-14-2014, 09:47 AM #5I would assume any car exported to the US had power steering (plus a lot more that was optional on the home market)... It was only optional on some early-ish low-end cars which I assume didn't find theyr official way to the US either... If you'r keen, I can ask arround in joymoney, they'r usually not wanted. That said - I only ever saw a single 200 without power steering, it's probably on of THE most ticked options
and from what ive heard, its just to change the pitmanarm (whatever you call it) from the w123 to the w115 stearingbox...
anyone got any input on that? shipping would probably kill the whole point of getting them over here anyhow.

Don't forget you will need the lower steering shaft. You cannot use it unless you have the longer lower steering shaft unless you fabbed something. Also, the rubber boot grommit is different.

I've got someone to help me with the fab. The biggest challenge at this point is reading the post and figuring out how to bid on it. I've tried a couple times with no success. I have a friend in Denmark but I don't know if there is enough time left in the auction to get him engaged.

Initially I planned to just convert to a 'universal' manual steering rack (Flaming River Omni) but I really like using OEM bolt-in parts. Plus I kind of like the uniqueness of the old Mercedes steering system, even if rack-and-pinion is generally better for spirited driving. If nothing else, I will probably just figure out a way to 'properly' de-power the power steering box.

Adapting an old used steering box that is not a direct fit seems a waste of time. You may as will purchase a brand new universal manual steering box, though with all that effort spent on adapting a different box, you could just convert to a manual steering rack, which in fact would probably be even easier and perform better.

i dont think it would be extremely unique, mercedes has a history of reusing stuff over and over, unless broken.
differentials from a 1985 w126 fits a 1968 w114, and brakes from a 1990 w126 fits the same w114 at the back, and w123 from 1976.
im still not shure why you want it thou? the w123 i drove that had it, aswell as the w115s i own doesnt exactly promoted sporty driving, its a tad different feel.
but mostly its a lot of spinning of steeringwheel, even at normal speed at parkinglots my w115 feels stressfull at times.
