Okay, multiple questions.

Dad has a 1990 300e 2.6 that just doesn't run correctly. Quite frankly, those mechanical fuel injection system on the Mercedes gas engines are so finicky it isn't even funny.
I have a 1990 300D Turbo parts car that is a bit crunchy. I also have a 1987 190e 2.3-16 that is a bit crunchy, too.

My question is, how much difficulty would I have converting the 300e to a 300d regarding electronics?

Let's say the conversion is now done. Can I use the flywheel from the 2.3-16 on the OM603 without issue? I want the five speed, even though it is a close ratio.

The last question is about the 2.3-16 LSD. Would it be worth it to install in the W124? An LSD in general would be a major improvement, but is the ratio too far out to maintain a good cruising RPM? Acceleration would be tip top, but it would scream at 80, much like my W123 non-turbo.

Any help you can give would be much appreciated.

Yes the flywheel and 5spd from the 16v will bolt up to the diesel engine. Be sure to save the front half of the driveshaft from the 16v for the swap. The 16v has a 3.27 diff (I think) vs the diesels 2.65. Its not a huge difference and might actually make the car more fun to drive. If you plan to do a lot of highway driving and don't really care about the acceleration you could build a hybrid out of the 2 diffs with the 2.65 gears and 16v LSD. They are both the same 185mm size.

Thanks for the info and the link! Do you have any idea about the engine electronics and whatnot?

Here's where I did something very similar: http://www.superturbodiesel.com/std/Thre...03-project

So is it just the vacuum ignition switch and the glow plug setup that i mainly have to worry about?

Do you think that it'd be a better choice to put the OM603 into the 2.3-16? I know i'd need a V8 W124 swaybar to clear and something about front springs, but hell, I'd hate to crush a 2.3-16.

You have to worry about the AC too.

It would be harder to fit a 6-cylinder in a 2.3 - they made a few changes to the 190e 2.6 to fit one in there, the radiator is underneath the crossmember, and the crossmember is removable.
