Hi guys
I've had my car for about 18 months now, and while it isn't that slow (4 speed manual ftw) I've been considering a turbo engine swap.

Couple of weeks ago on a work trip I came across a guy who has a paddock full of MBs and a couple of sheds worth of parts. I was originally after a 717.411 gearbox to swap into my car, but he's offered me a car which is rather appealing.

It's a 1984 240TD which has had a turbo 617 swapped into it and a T1 van "iron box" 5 speed with it (never asked if it's a 711.110 or .113 but pretty sure it had overdrive and a not a really low 1st). Also has 15" Bundts (not included if I get it) and W126 front brakes. Rare as hens teeth in New Zealand for sure. Not really interested in the car itself due to being rather rough, just want to swap engine and drivetrain over.

So I thought that I could go the full hog and turn my car into a superturbo sleeper. This is what I'm thinking of doing:

-send either the M pump from my current .912 engine away to get 7.5mm elements or the MW for 8mm (maybe 10mm? Tongue)

-buy a adapter and fit a HE351VE turbo off ebay onto the stock manifold, work out a mechanical vane actuator that works from EMP and pedal position

-get a custom intercooler and radiator made up to fit nicely. Looking at putting the intercooler pipes in the gap between the radiator and right side headlight housing, need a reverse-flow intercooler

-get an airbox and filter that will be compact as possible but still hooks up to the factory ram intake (not a K&N filter person)

-hook up water injection

-get a high torque clutch, may have to modify the flywheel?

-keep the current 3.46 diff, as the 711.113 gearbox has perfect 5th gear RPM for 100kph which is the max speed limit here

-the turbo engine has the SLS pump, wondering if it's possible to hook it up to the steering box with a pressure relief valve as to not blow the seals in it? Already have a tank handy.

-looking at around 300hp if possible, hopefully the torque won't break the gearbox etc. Is it worth upgrading the flex disks?

-also going to do lots of other mods that aren't really performance related...stock vacuum pump removal, add a belt driven air compressor etc.

You're off to a good start and you seem to have been doing your homework.
I don't know if a 617 can make 300hp without a significant financial investment.
An 8mm mw pump might get the HE351 to make good boost but I don't think you'd be able to use the turbo to its fullest. Its designed for a 24 valve 6.7 liter cummins and we've only got 10v 3L. I suppose if you kept the stock turbo and compounded it with your holset you'd be making some serious power.

I've got a HE351 also and have spent many nights trying to figure out to control it properly without using software. There's loads of good ideas out there but I couldn't help wondering if/how to use the SLS pump to power a tiny hydraulic actuator fitted to the turbo for controlling the vanes. I've sketched up some plans but I really know very little about hydraulics so I've stalled.

Do you know what flywheel and clutch the trans is using?

That turbo also has a frontward facing compressor outlet which would make piping to the intercooler simpler. Seems to be cheapish too although I'd still have to ship it over here.

Still new to the world of turbos so open to all suggestions.

300hp seems to be the limit on standard internals according to the Finns/Swedes.

Never asked what the setup is, but I can always use the flywheel in my current setup. In an ideal world I would go for a G wagen flywheel.

Thoughts on Eaton M90 feeding a HY35W? Use a custom exhaust manifold to lower the turbo down so that I can fit my NA 617 intake, try sit the M90 on top of it, doubt there's enough room though...

If anything I think you should feed something larger than a hy35. Even a hx35 would be better than an hy. The 9cm housing would be a choke point at higher rpms with a m90 feeding it.
If I am wrong hopefully someone corrects me. But most other people feed hx40s which most of those have 16cm housings and all the threads I've read say they spool those instantly almost.

Regular hx40 has 58mm wheel
Super hx40 is 60mm if I remember correctly

Super hx40 is 60mm if I remember correctly

The HE351CW wheel swaps over with the HX40 right? Although its easier buying it already setup with the bigger wheel anyway...

Having a bit of trouble with the air filter housing, as you know it shakes itself to bits, it rattles the heater hose as it came loose underneath somewhere, and also is hitting the brake master cylinder and vibrates the hell out of that. And I still have major car shaking issues with the turbo engine (did before with the NA), not sure if phoenix mounts will fix it
