24V & E320 brakes vs. pressed ball joints vs. std. wheels
Hi!

This is the E320 brake disc; 294x25mm:

This is the 24V brake disc; 295x22mm:

Despite being smaler, the 24V disc has LESS clearance to the ball joint, due to a higher inset! But; it clears, if just.

Next issue: wheel clearance. The caliper is wider. That's the only issue with stock wheels. You can see where the caliper fouls (don't be fooled, it's MUCH wider, the wheel bolts don't even grip the threads!):

However; with only a 10mm spacer - the stock non-24V 15" wheels fit. Even the steels.

The wheel clearance was tested with the 24V caliper, I don't have a E320 caliper at hand. When it comes to thefour pot calipers it's VERY important to know: the early 320s had the 24V brake setup!! 22mm thick discs. It's only the later E-Class face-lift models which got a slightly different brake. With 25mm discs. Due to the differently sized discs and different offset of the discs, they are NOT interchangeable. But the later E320 294x25mm disc has much better clearance to the std. pressed ball joints!

Usuefull information to add to this thread would be: do std. wheels clear the E320 brake?? With a 10mm spacer?

I guess this is all more orless known, I just though I say it one more time as there seems so much confusion about those two brake setups.

The 295x22 seemed fit without issue on the W201 control arms I'm using. I wish I could find steel wheels on this side of the pond, oh well. Here's a handy dandy size chart with rotor weights.

You don't have steels!?!? We throw them in the bin 'cause there are much more than we can store Big Grin We usually only keep the best wagon steels, the rest goes straight to the scrap skip...

But now to the W210 control arms - how'd you fit them!? As far as I remember, the ball joint is in the wheel carrier?

And here's the mising 300x28mm brake disc that does all the magic:

Aaaaah! :-)

Yes, they do clear it - but the E320/294mm disc has better clearance. So if I was to upgrade to the "smal" 4-pot brake, I'd use the 294mm brake Smile I myself am going the 300mm route.

I also have got a set of late 320 brakes for my 300D 1985, but it seems like the lower balljoints clearence is different. a early w124 from 80ish has smaller clearence than the later ones.. ? anyone tested this?

I fitted these to a 90 ce and the discs did rub but I got 2mm shims made for behind the discs and calipers and works perfect

Shims is an option I thought about but decided against... Since I'm runing 16" wheels anyway, I used the 300SL brake setup...

See here: http://www.superturbodiesel.com/std/Thre...0#pid65890

Fronts = 500E 300mm ventd discs
Rears = std. wagon 278x9mm solid discs
Double membrane booster
R129 master cylinder
