Is there anybody out there that can make billet rods for the om617?

Also, who uses ARP headstuds?

And finally, what are people doing for upgraded valve springs?

The build for the Jeep cj7/OM617 will be as follows

Dieselmeken 8mm MW pump
Drilled prechambers
P/P heads
Custom intake and exhaust headers
KKK/HE351 compound turbos with 20mm gates
Adapter plate to jeep manual trans
South bend clutch
If possible, billet rods, upgraded valve springs, and ARP studs. Possibly even a bedplate.

Thanks!

Why billet? Are you trying to get into the 6k RPM range?

Correct me is I'm wrong but would billet rods be less dense than even pressure diecast rods, let alone forged ones?

Billet as in forged billet 4340 material cut to dimension. Do you guys in the merc world not upgrade the internals to hold engines together at high HP? I mean, I understand that the head flow is only suitable for 300hp without going over 2bar of boost, but then you get high cylinder pressures that cause the destruction of connecting rods. So my question is, is there a company that sells connecting rods...... of a higher strength than the stock ones. If not that's fine. I can always move fueling higher in the rpms and run nitrous which will bring cylinder pressures back in to check and still net me HP in the 300 range. Plus the 8mm pump will give me the fuel for it inside the injection window without using excessive timing which also causes CP spiking. I just wanted to do it on fuel only.

I think if I were going to go to all that trouble I would just import a 605 or 606. Aftermarket parts are actually available for them, and they Can withstand a lot more power.

But if you really want high hp om617 I think your going to need to lower compression and possibly different rods like you speak of.

What are you doing with this jeep?

Yeah I was planning on taking a bit off the pistons.

I'm sure this is going to sound like a stupid question, but would a 605 rod fit? Same dimensions as the 617 rod?

What am I planning on doing? Well heck this is just the parts runner vehicle. Shop truck if you will. Big Grin The premise behind a shop truck is to do cool stuff and push it till it blows so you can build it bigger. Rinse and repeat. The only rule is you need to do it with something obscure and unorthodox. Lol!

Well most people don't bother with a 617, so it definitely would be unorthodox haha!
It can be done, it just going to take some money and time. Nah be get ahold of dieselmeken, he might know of someone over seas with a hot running om617

The rods do bend when you get crazy, so that's a good place to start.
EDIT: 617 turbo pistons are ~$500 new, so be careful handling them.

IIRC, the bottom end on the 617 is flat so a girdle would just be going between the caps, I don't know how much strength you'll gain there

Cometic made Rudolf a custom headgasket.
Look up JTY's build, it's pretty straightforward and makes good power with stock parts
Unless you're going 4wd, any reason for the heep transmission?

Wanna buy a set of exhaust flanges? Big Grin

I may try to O-ring the head. I just wish there was somewhere that could make some rods. I mean, it's no different in trucks. Once you get ove X amount of torque, the rods go. Easy enough, let's just toss in some billet rods. Problem here though is there is nobody making them.

If I were you (i'm not) I would find the exact dimensions of the stock OM617A conrod, and see if anyone else makes something with similar measures.
Anything from one of your powerstroke conrods, to a gasser stroker kit. Someone probably has something.

Or you could go talk with Black Smoke Racing. They state that they use "Arrow Rods" on their OM606, presumably manufactured by Arrow Precision.
However, this would involve a lot of custom machine work and whatnots. Expect to pay more than the engine was originally worth for it.

Besides that? pray you don't window the block with stock conrods.

(06-13-2014, 01:51 PM)vanderchevy18 Is there anybody out there that can make billet rods for the om617?

I run rods from Pauter Machine in my VW: http://pauter.com/parts/rods/
Their steel rods support over 300 HP per cylinder. Off-the-shelf applications are not cheap, so I'd imagine their custom rods are $$$$.

Other manufacturers that offer custom rods: R&R, Wiseco, Carrillo, Molner Technologies, Cunningham, MGP and BME (these last two are primarily aluminum, IIRC), etc. Again, it's going to be expensive.

Just buy some old connecting rods off eBay and send them to one of those shops listed above. I'm sure they can blueprint, enhance and whack some out on a CNC mill.

But it sounds like the stock ones are fine up to 2-2.5 bar? What is that, 300hp?
