Finally getting back into the car.

So fall of 2015 I went on a pretty hard run, putting the car through its paces. The next time I went to drive it, wouldn't start. Went through most all of the diagnostics and tricks but nothing I did worked. Threw the keys down in disgust and didn't touch the car for a year.

After a long break, I'm working on the car again. Gutted the interior and changed it to all black. And yesterday I pulled the engine to do a full rebuild.

Pics and updates to follow

Well I got the engine torn down almost to the block. Good news, bad news.

Good news - The head looks great, no cracks or damage that I can see.

Bad news - 4 of the 5 glow plugs were broken off. The pistons have tiny dents where the shrapnel came through. Also it has oversize pistons. 4 of them are #1 oversize, and one is #2 oversize.

Also bad news, I can't seem to upload any pictures.

Keino - good to hear from you again as well  Cool

I contacted Auto Verdi and ordered a set of H-beam rods, six weeks out.

Wondering where to go from here with the block/pistons

Took the engine down to the block today. Got new cylinder liners, I'm going to contact the machine shop tomorrow about getting them pressed in and bored/honed.

Everything looked quite good on the lower end, I was surprised.

The plan as of now is to pull the engine out of my '85 and take the pistons out of it. I pulled the head, they're all #1 oversize but look to be in good shape. Provided they check good when I get them out I plan to send them out to get coated, ceramic on top, Teflon (or similar) on the skirts.

Also I want to talk to Swaintech about coating the prechambers.

You can port the head yourself, just use common sense. You want easy flow and smooth transitions, not nevessarily a giant gaping hole in the head.

So, the new pistons came in, dropped them off at the machinist since he needed to measure them for the final hone. Also dropped off my head to have it ported.

Cometic (the gasket company) is 5 miles from my house so I drove there today to talk with them. Having them make me a copper head gasket, stock thickness as I'm not lowering compression. The plan now is to run a copper gasket and o-ring the block.

Eagerly awaiting the results of another forum members work with the cam and valve springs.

Having the machine shop do it because they have all the proper equipment. Ultrasound, ect. His price was also very reasonable. He's going to flow bench it before and after so we have some actual numbers too.

(06-21-2017, 01:26 PM)led-panzer So, the new pistons came in, dropped them off at the machinist since he needed to measure them for the final hone.

You had better port that head while it's off, or forever kick yourself!

Big Grin

Having the machine shop do it because they have all the proper equipment. Ultrasound, ect. His price was also very reasonable. He's going to flow bench it before and after so we have some actual numbers too.
